Cooking oil
Do you guys have a cooking oil shortage?
The olive oil is fine here, so I’m good with that. The problem is I can’t get sunflower oil anywhere. And because the sunflower oil is gone, people bought all the rapeseed oil and I can’t get any normal cooking oil. I’ve looked in at least 5 different supermarkets.
You guys having the same problem?

Re: Cooking oil
Haven't heard of any but I usually just use Vegetable Oil and EVOO and have had no problem getting those.
I actually haven't found much that I can't find so I think sometimes it it the places people shop.

Yeah, all that is left is the expensive olive oils. I do have avocado oil, so I’ll use that, but I like the cheaper oil for certain things.
I’m reading about it and apparently it is a problem here and there are limits (to stop the panic buying, or Hamster shoppers as they call them here; hoarders are called Messies) on buying certain things like wheat products and oils. I haven’t seen any signs up yet. Just empty shelves. Apparently, Ukraine is a big exporter of sunflower oil and wheat.
Some restaurants have had to put a limit on fried stuff like fries because there isn’t enough oil for frying.

That's interesting. I like the tactic of limiting to stop the hoarding. They should have done that here in 2020 with toilet paper. I mean eventually stores had a limit on how much TP you could buy but it was already too late at that point. Nuts!
And yes, restaurants fry in cheap oils because of the cost. So I can see that being an issue for restaurants

Oh, they ran out of toilet paper here, too. But I don’t recall it being that bad. They did start limits on that after they sold out.
I only noticed it was a problem because someone on FB marketplace was selling bottles of sunflower oil for $2. And it was the cheap oil at Lidl, so it is normally like 70 cents. Food prices are generally cheaper here. I was wondering why someone would be selling oil on FB marketplace. So I started looking and lo and behold there was no oil in supermarkets. But, hey, our mask mandate is being lifted for supermarkets after almost two years, yay.

This is exactly why I don’t use seed/vegetable oils. They convert to free radicals in the body and can cause a lot of damage, even olive oil when heated at high temperature can cause the same thing.
Klingklang do u use it for deep frying? If it’s just for frying, other oils can last u a pretty long time so wouldn’t have to spend too much, too often. Avocado oil, coconut oil (refine-cold pressed), ghee, or even butter. Olive oil too but not for frying.

Yeah, I tend to use it for deep frying and for searing meats after they come out of my sous vide because of the higher smoke point.
I know avocado oil also has a high smoke point, and I bought a bottle of that. I don’t use the sunflower oil or avocado oil too much, but it’s annoying because I now need it. I’ll start paying more attention to avocado oil now that I have some.
I also use a plain olive oil (not EVOO) for regular sauté dishes and EVOO for salad dressings or frying eggs or making tomato sauce.
I don’t like coconut oil.

It really depends on the smoke point. But I am not spending $10 (when it costs $2 with the cheaper oil) on avocado oil to fill up my fryer to fry up chicken wings. Chicken wings that I have 2-3 times a year. Damn. Now I really, really want Buffalo wings. The baked healthy version doesn’t cut it.

I know! That's why deep frying is done in cheap oil. It's way too costly. DH was once frying Brussel sprouts in the deep fryer while doing keto and he was filling that bad boy with avocado oil. I was like- you are going to put us in the poor house!

I don’t mind it for public transportation and I will probably stick with it. The rules are a little confusing for my work, though. I would prefer to keep distance and when I move around the class, I will use my mask. I wear glasses so they fog up (dawn soap trick doesn’t work) and that’s annoying.

Yeah, that’s where I draw the line! I barely use my deep fryer, and I don’t eat fast food like McDonald’s (never had a Big Mac in my life!), so I’ll go with the cheaper oil for 500 Alex.

Ugghh yeah, you should have a choice. I think there are anti-fog items out there as I know one of my friends works for a company that came out right away with that in the beginning. I only have worn glasses with a mask when I am out and have reading glasses on, waiting in a doctor's office, so it can really be a pain.

Yeah, I didn’t like hamburgers when I was young because my dad made them like hockey pucks. He overcooked all the beef we BBQed, so I strongly disliked red meat. I had a problem with the texture of most meats. I only recently started going beyond chicken about 10 years ago. Still picky about sausages. Always loved fish.
I did have a Whopper, though. But I didn’t like it and I never bothered with McDonald’s. And I grew up right around the corner from All-American. Fries only.
I now eat burgers, but only from nice restaurants.

I actually just finished my last pack of toilet paper I bought during the pandemic this week. I guess I bought too much lol.
