Flu almost non-existent in 2020-2021 season

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2021/05/10/flu-cases-historically-low-during-covid-what-expect-fall/7088318002/

A year full of social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing and staying at home to prevent coronavirus spread rendered the 2020-2021 influenza season practically nonexistent.

Public health and clinical laboratories reported 2,038 flu cases during the season from Sept. 27, 2020, to April 24, 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency estimated about 38 million people were sick with the flu during the 2019-2020 season.

aside from my allergic reaction back in march (still don't know what the hell that was) and my son getting an upset stomach a few days ago, no one i know has gotten a cold or the flu in what seems like forever!!

Still not worth wearing a mask for the rest of my life to avoid common illnesses.
I'll take my chances once this is all over.
I never got sick before masks anyway

I thought that's all attributed to people being diagnosed incorrectly with CoVId?

I actually don't mind wearing a mask in public when I'm indoors (shopping, etc) so I'll probably continue. Although, to be fair, most of the cooties that I get are probably from my son's school.

Exactly and much of Covid consisted of symptoms of viruses, the flu and pneumonia, buttttt...won’t go into that right now.

This is misinformation.

POSITIVE Covid tests are reliable and indicate a person has Covid and not the flu. The antigens they are looking for when performing the test are specific to Covid and have no commonality to the antigens on the influenza membrane.

This!!! Plus there’s a reason why microorganisms exist outside and within our bodies. Yes, no one enjoys being sick but we can’t deny that “getting sick” from time to time (not all the time of course), helps our defenses become more robust.

That’s a gray area. Some think it was because at the beginning there wasn’t an actual test for covid 19, then because there weren’t enough tests which resulted in some people getting diagnosed based on symptoms only (which is not accurate), then u have controversy with pcr tests even by what its creator Kary Mullis have said about these tests before he passed away. There was also controversy on how accurate rapid tests are. Who knows to what degree all of these things are true or not but for sure there’s a lot of info that should be considered about this topic.

Exactly. Not to mention lockdowns, empty cities, businesses going under (mostly small ones, while the big guys did just fine), inability to socialize or even go to the office - no thanks.

Exactly. A bunch of kids are still in school virtually or at least were during the winter months, offices still closed (including mine), social distancing, more people staying home, limited capacity when you do go out. That all contributed to lower common illness this past year not just the masks.

I would also hope that people are taking basic hygiene like hand washing more seriously and also staying home if their sick.

FTR: My little one that is in Pre-K 5 days a week has gotten sick 2x these past few months with a cold and low grade fever even with the masks on most of the time in school. They only take them off for snack.

Everyone I know that had flu like symptoms and went to get a flu test was given a covid test and told that flu tests weren't available. I don't know one person that tested negative for covid but was actually given a flu test. Does anyone know of someone that actually got a flu test this year?

My daughter was given a flu test at PM pediatrics. She ended up being negative for flu, positive for COVID.

Fake news, this is attributed to no reporting or testing.

I know several people who had the flu, and for obvious reasons #s in illnesses are going to be lower due to quarantine and lockdowns. Hence why Covid #s dropped, surprisingly this works for all viruses.

I also know someone whose rapid Covid test was positive and the doctor advised her that it was probably the flu and to wait for the the regular test. The flu test was positive regular Covid test negative. Apparently rapid test were flagging Covid + for flu viruses.

Hmmm interesting. Covid is also considered a coronavirus.

That's really interesting because PM Pediatrics refused to give my nephew a flu test. My sister was told "we're not seeing flu this year." For the record, my nephew and my sister both tested negative for Covid after a PCR test.

We went to a location in Nassau County and we didn't even ask for it, they offered it to her.
