Federal jury duty
I got a questionnaire in the mail for federal jury duty in Brooklyn, to fill out and send back. In the past when I have gotten any jury duty questionnaires and filled them out, I’ve gotten called for jury duty. I really can’t serve because although I work full time, I have to put my special needs son on the bus in the morning (my boss understands my situation and fortunately allows me to come in a little later to do this). I don’t have anyone else that can do this for me/help me out. Do you think this would be a valid excuse to get out of jury selection? My dh thinks I shouldn’t even send it back but then I don’t know if I’d be subpoenaed.

Re: Federal jury duty
Is your child under 10? I just got the same one a few months ago and if child is under 10 you send a copy of birth certificate and they excuse you.

Federal jury duty
This wasn’t federal, but the last time I got a questionnaire I sent a photocopy of my kids birth certificates and said I couldn’t do it.

Re: Federal jury duty
Yes he is 6. But it’s just the questionnaire. Also I work full time so would that matter?

Full time employment doesn’t matter. Most people on jury duty work full time. I had grand jury duty and had to go M-Th for 4 weeks. I work full time and had a 3 year old.

In general if you work full time they won't excuse you with the childcare excuse because they figure well someone must be watching your kids while you work. Dh had to state he was not employed outside the home. Also he didn't send that letter in until he got a notice to serve, not just a questionnaire.

Re: Federal jury duty
Oh sorry, I sent the copy of the birth certificate when I got the summons to serve, not for the questionnaire.
The working part doesn't matter.

We were told if you work full time yoy can't get the child care excusal. Because you clearly have child care that allows you to work full time so you are expected to use that same child care to serve jury duty as well. Otherwise anyone with a young child would never be on a jury

Re: Federal jury duty
If you are the unemployed parent or guardian and main care-giver of a child under 14 years of age and are requesting to be postponed or excused, please submit a copy of your youngest child’s birth certificate.
If you are employed on a part-time basis or during night hours, please submit a copy of your youngest child’s birth certificate and a letter from your employer stating the days and hours of your employment.
From the federal site:
3.If you have active care and custody of children under the age of 10 and you are not employed or are employed part-time, you must submit a copy of the child's birth certificate. If you are the sole care-giver to an aged or infirm person whose health and/or safety would be jeopardized by your absence for jury service, you must submit a doctor's letter attesting to this fact.

Federal jury duty
Two different women in my office were called for jury duty recently, in two different counties. They both have small children and neither were able to get out of it because they work full time.
ETA you could still try though. You may get someone sympathetic who will let you off.

Federal jury duty
I would send it back. They seem to pay more attention to you if you don't.
I would request exemption in that he is a special needs child and you cannot begin work until he is on the bus at whatever time. You may even prepare a letter for your boss to sign, stating such.
I have gotten exemptions in the past, but they do require a lot of paperwork and proof. I think they don't want to make it too easy, or otherwise everyone would be doing it. And save all your correspondence, because they may send you the same thing next year. (It has happened to me a few times). Good Luck.

Federal jury duty
Federal jury duty, it doesn’t matter, I got the Brooklyn one wrote a letter explaining I wasn’t going to Brooklyn because of distance but would gladly serve on the federal in central Islip. I got resummoned 6 months after the letter and had to call in every day for 2 weeks. I would try and request an exemption. If I was called to serve, I couldn’t not work, my old job gave 3 days for jury duty. I would have had to state i knew the person or had some issue with the crime they committed to be dismissed. Good luck!

Re: Federal jury duty
I just served federal jury duty. I was on phone standby for 2 weeks and had to appear once during that time. They will not excuse you from showing up if you work (even if you have children); however, no attorney will want you on a jury if you don't want to be there! No need to make anything up - just request a sidebar conference when and if you are questioned to sit on a jury.

I would not rely on that. I was put on a federal case and the judge basically told off the group and shamed us because people were trying to get off by appearing lkke they didn’t want to be there. He then made a NO EXCUSE policy for the remainder of the selection and of course I was the very next juror called.

Re: Federal jury duty
I think that would be an excusable reason. Federal jury duty is tough because you don't need to be there every day, or even for the full day, but those seem like circumstances they might allow for dismissal.
I served federal jury duty for 3 months- 1 or 2 days a week for that time period. We had people that came and went- someone had a vacation planned, another left halfway through for maternity leave, etc. They would not allow for full dismissal.
ETA: Wait, I'm sorry, I'm mistaking federal jury duty for grand jury duty. I served on grand jury duty in Brooklyn.

Not Federal Court, I work, my son was 4 at the time and I had to report. I live on SI and they switched it from CI to Brooklyn. So maybe you can ask that if CI is closer to you...
And don't ignore it, my co worker just got a judgement filed against her from ignoring jury duty

You may still get a summons. The questionnaires are really just prelimin. If you do get a summons that is when you can send in your letter and proof and ask for excusal

This same thing happened to me when I was 19. The judge said he didn’t want to hear one more excuse. I was only asked 1 question- my age. Bam! I was picked. I served a federal case for 2 weeks and had to drive Brooklyn every day. What a nightmare. I even missed a couple classes from what I remember. My mom was pissed. She was telling me to tell them I was in school. I said mom, the judge was yelling and said he didn’t care about anyone’s issues. I’m assuming they would know I was in school if I was 19. My professors were pretty good about it. One said ooh if the case is in the papers, let me know. Lol.

A bunch of years ago my Dh got called. The case was about an NYPD officer who put a hit on his girlfriend or something. Dh was an NYPD officer at the time. You would think that the prosecutor wouldn't want any cops on the jury for fear they might be biased in favor of the cop. Nope they were going to put him on that jury. But then something happened and they all wound up getting excused for some reason. But I was pretty surprised
