Getting Rid of Old Jewelry - Question
I am trying to purge of all my old jewelry, most of it is like fake jewelry - junk, made to look real. Some of it is real. I have no idea what's what - just that most of it is junk and some is real and I don't want it anymore. I also have like a plethora of broken necklaces, crappy honor society pins, etc. I'm not looking to make $ off of it (although walking out with $20 bucks or more would feel nice, my husband thinks $20 is a stretch already...) but I want to donate it properly where maybe they can recycle the good metals or resell some of the junk jewelry. Do you know where I could find a good place to do this?

Re: Getting Rid of Old Jewelry - Question
I went to Busy Bee jewelry in Massapequa and they paid pretty good. I also went to Gold Old Gold, which is a few minutes from Busy Bee on Sunrise highway.

Re: Getting Rid of Old Jewelry - Question
No one will want broken costume jewelry or honor pins. Just chuck them, no offense.
Real gold or silver you can sell by the ounce. Silver should be stamped 825 or 925 and gold should be labeled 14k somewhere.
If you don’t see the labels, throw it out.

Re: Getting Rid of Old Jewelry - Question
Take it all to a jeweler that buys silver and gold to check. Sell what they will buy and toss the rest if it’s broken or old pins no one would want that.

What about a school?
Maybe they can use it for arts and crafts for the broken costume pieces?
If there are any good pieces maybe to the theater for their costumes?

Re: Getting Rid of Old Jewelry - Question
Donate it to a thrift shop.
I have a ton of vintage costume jewelry from MIL and her SIL. One of these days I'll go thru it and see if it might be worth selling on eBay. There is a lot of vintage rhinestone stuff. Then there is a lot of dime-store crap too. Anything that was real gold or silver was sold, there was a lot of that so we did real good. I got my second wedding band out of that sale.
