Anyone here do the 23 and me kit?
If you did the 23 and me kit, how long did it take for your sample to arrive at the lab? I mailed my sample on 11/28 and according to USPS tracking, the kit is still in transit. I emailed 23 and me and they told me that it is not unusual and to contact them if its not delivered after 4 weeks. Just was curious to hear of other's experiences.

I haven't done the kit yet (giving my dh one for xmas though) but I ship things via USPS all the time that I sell on Ebay , and if the lab is within the continental US (which I assume it is?) It should have been received by now. Most things that I ship take less than a week to arrive. However, some things do get delayed temporarily, for various reasons, so if it's not delivered after 4 weeks, I'm guessing they will consider it lost and will hopefully send you a new kit, especially since you have the tracking proof that you sent it.

No, and I would urge everyone to do their research in terms of having their genetic information owned by 23 and me.

Same. I’m very wary of 23 and Me / Ancestry. Read up on the risks before jumping into this.

I did it. As did a few of my family members. The later the sample was sent, the longer it took. Also depending on sales, influx of orders.
Curious, what type of info would be harmful.

Anyone here do the 23 and me kit?
My sister gifted it to my mom last year She knew everything that it said but IMO it’s all a gimmick to make you spend more money. In order to find more and more out you have to spend more and more money My mom thought it was so stupid :( I hope this doesn’t offend anyone

I did Ancestry. My genetics matched several my cousins/second cousins. So that's how you know

I respect her opinion. I had like zero interest in doing this for the reasons indicated in the links above, but one day this year something came over me and I sent away for the AncestryDNA kit. When my results came back, they were unsurprising (but for those who think it’s bs, they identified in my dna the exact county in Ireland my grandparents came from), but I found my dna matches interesting—even if they were distant cousins.
However, I was matched with only one first cousin...who I did not know, and I know and am close with all my first cousins. That was weird...until she got in touch with me. She was given up at birth by her biological mother and had no information at all about either her or her biological father until she took the test. When it paired her with me, I turned out to be her closest paternal match. She was so excited, and even more so when I pieced the whole thing together...I discovered that it looked like my uncle had a daughter who he never knew existed! With some prodding (because he did NOT want his genetic info “out there,”, he took the test and guess what? Their shared results were “Parent/Child!” He lives far away, but they met in person this summer and text every day. He even has two grandchildren! We’re celebrating Christmas together this year.
Despite anything else, it was worth it 100% for this!

I think they legitimately sequence your genetic material. I don’t think they are giving their customers false information. If you got back that you’re 16% Native American then yes, I believe it.
However, once they have your information, you can be uniquely identified for a myriad of reasons. These companies can sell your genetic information. They can be subpoenaed to provide to law enforcement. Before you think that can’t affect you, there have been cases where people have been convicted of crimes because their DNA was very similar to someone else’s. I’ve heard stories of sperm donors being found years after their biological children are born. The information can be used to develop new drugs, which I don’t have an issue with but others might.
The CNBC article Pearl Jam Chick posted does a great job of summarizing everything.
I think it’s cool to find these things out, but just be aware of the risks.

What a great story!! So cool to hear.
A woman found me who is related to me on my mother's side and she sent me extensive family trees, photos, etc. It was so cool.
She 'vetted' me first, lol.

Not trying to convince you. Just going to give my experience.
Mine came back saying I was everything I was always told I was growing up.
My brothers (twins) were given the last name of one man. And believing he was their father until they were in their 30's. But were actually my fathers sons. When my brother sent his in we were all wondering what it would say. It came back listing him as a full sibling. Not a half. Now we want to get the other twin to send his in and see how the brothers compare.
I do know people that won't do it because they don't want their DNA out there. Especially now that it's being used to connect a family member to a crime.
ETS: It was given to me as a gift. I never upgraded anything. I'm not all that interested in 2nd, 3rd, 4th cousins...

Same. It's not a gimmick, DNA doesn't lie and Ancestry wouldn't be in business all these decades if it was We have also found distant family members from it. It's awesome if you are the type that cares about your heritage and finding people you are related too.

Re: Anyone here do the 23 and me kit?
Thanks all. I finally got an email today that they received it, I guess USPS never scanned it as delivered.
I did decline all of their consent for research and sharing my sample, and storing my sample... not sure if that is going to make a difference.
I find it interesting that I could possibly connect to relatives I didn't know I have.

I have thought about it. I grew up not knowing my father's side of things. I do know that he was married and has kids before he met my mom and after they divorced. I also know he had relocated to CA. So, I am kind of guessing that I have potential half siblings all over. Sometimes I wonder, sometimes I don't. But right now it is not worth spending the money on.

Re: Anyone here do the 23 and me kit?
My dad is getting it for my sister and I for Xmas. I didn’t ask for it but figured why not? My grandmother was adopted (she had passed away when I was little) so I am curious about that. My mom knew her info (she had a brother that was adopted by a different family) but I know the records they kept years ago weren’t that great so I’m not sure how accurate my grandmothers background was. My sister thinks it’s all a hoax and the government is going to clone us with our DNA. I’m like trust me they don’t want you as a clone. But she is doing it to appease me. I have 0 expectations but we shall see.

Re: Anyone here do the 23 and me kit?
I did the Ancestry one. So did DW. We did find some interesting things, and they confirmed family stories, so I have no reason to believe any of it was made up.
For anyone that has seen me in person, you know I'm almost the definition of "Caucasian". When I was a toddler, I was platinum blond. When the results came back, I found out that I'm roughly 15% African. Congo region, not South African or very northern African.
Doesn't change who I am, but it's fascinating to discover that. I also use that info for anyone I know that is racist. Kinda messes with their whole racist notions...
I've heard stories of similar results coming from KKK members... When the results were announced, they got kicked out of the "club"....
