Need a new laptop - help!

I really know nothing about computers. I've been reading up on them but so much to know. Any great black Friday or cyber Monday deals out there? My old one is a piece of junk and was when I bought it. It freezes up all the time and takes forever to boot up an access websites. What should I be looking for? Don't want to spend a fortune. What about the 2 in 1s? Are they worth it. So confusing. TIA.

Re: Need a new laptop - help!

i need a new one too.

Im looking for 15 or 17" with 8GB of ram. (I currently have 6 and it seems slow).

2GHz minimum processor. I haev an Intel i7 Core and I feel like its just OK. but this is a few years old.

I run win 10 but bought it with win 8. I like 8 over 10 but not much you can do about that.

I have an HP Pavillion.

The type of computer to look for is very dependent on what you will be using it for. If you're hard core gaming, then you're looking at the super high end computers, at around $4000 or more.

Windows or Apple?
Most surfing the web, email, some office applications, etc?
Anything graphics intensive? Photoshop, decent gaming, etc.

Is weight important? If you're carrying it a lot, then it makes a difference. My primary laptop at home never moves, so I don't care about the weight.
Is screen size important? My main laptop is connected to two very big monitors, so the laptop screen size isn't important.

Do you have a maximum you'd like to spend?

Definitely don't need a gaming laptop (then my son would take it and I'd never see it lol)

Windows. always used it an like it. We already have a mac if I want to use it for something.

I do basic things - email, web, word, minor photo stuff, some basic online games (like Candy Crush type).

Would prefer a lighter laptop only because I've been tethered to my desk with this old one (touchpad doesn't work and I need a mouse and the battery doesn't last long) so I'd like it portable. Just not too heavy.

I think a 17" screen is too big but a 10"-11" screen is too small. Somewhere in between.

I checked some out in stores and of course the salesman all have their own ideas. Was told to go solid state - hard drive is not as good. Also go DDR4 not DDR3. I like the 8th gen intel chips but maybe an AMD Ryzen?

Basically I don't want to have to buy another one in a couple years because it doesn't work anymore. I was looking at a Samsung Notebook 7 Spin, a Lenovo Flex and one of the HP Pavilions. Also considering a Chromebook but I don't know if that's too limiting. So much to know and so many choices!

I bought a 15 inch Dell Inspirion 15 7000 series. Solid State drive and pretty light (Infinity screen- it goes all the way to the edge. I just bought it from Dell for $700.
I had originally checked Costco and I only saw expensive gaming computers with SSD.

Sure enough, right after I ordered it, I go to Costco and there it is a Dell Inspirion 15- 7000 SSD for $799 i7 processor. That is a sale price that may be up Nov 26.

Re: Need a new laptop - help!

You really can't go wrong if you get a Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, or Lenovo. They're all good brands, and most of the components are from the same factories, they just paint their own logos on them.

Minimum of 8GB of RAM. More is better, but it also costs more money.

Solid state drives are much nicer than spinning disk drives. Less heat, less power, less weight, but more money.

Don't get less than 256GB of hard drive space, whichever type of drive you get. Space fills up really fast.

Screen size is a matter of preference. The 17" screens are nice, but very heavy and awkward. 11" screens are light and portable, but hard to see. The 15" range seems to be the best compromise.

I like the touch screens, but that's also a matter of preference. DS and DD have touch screens, but my laptop doesn't.
