Pay as you go cell phone
I hope I don't sound ignorant, but I believe there are pay as you go phones. Does anyone have info on them and the best way to purchase one? My mom turned my dad's phone off as bill was high and he never uses it. Today she needed him to have one to call him. Are there phones that you get charged just for making a call and incoming calls? She asked me to look into it. She just needs one that only needs to make calls and takes incoming calls.

Re: Pay as you go cell phone
There are those tracfones. You buy the phone- or I think you can even use a current phone you have- and then you just purchase time/minutes to add to the phone via like a card. I know Target and Walmart sells them. Google Trac Fone and it should give you all the details.

Re: Pay as you go cell phone
DW, DS, and my mom all use TracFone. You buy minutes, texts, and data ala carte. None of them use the phone extensively, so it's very cheap. There are ways that you can keep the phone active for a year for under $40. Texts are $5 for 1000 texts, so if you mainly do texts and data over wi-fi, it's definitely the cheapest way to go.
We've been using TracFone for several years now, and I have no complaints.

Thank you. We only need it for calls. I'm hoping to find something where you pay for calls as you go. I just looked online and some cards you buy are only good for a certain amount of time, like 90 days. This is something that will not be used often, but they need to have.

Voice minutes are very cheap as well. They have a large range of options for what you can buy. Since my 3 are used regularly, for many years, just not a lot, we get plans that run the entire year. They do have short-term plans that you can get. If you get a 30 day card, and then don't continue your service until later, I don't think you'll keep the phone number. If that's not an issue, then you can buy a 30 day plan and let it lapse. Otherwise, you can buy minutes and service for the entire year, but much cheaper than a regular monthly service. with unlimited talk/text/data.

Thank you for all the info. Do you know the cheapest place and phone to buy? Even a flip phone would be great. My mom just wants to reach him when they are separating and she needs to pick him up. It became an issue this morning.

Buy right from Tracfone. They have a plan, for $15 dollars, you get a phone, and a 30 day plan with 200 minutes and 500 texts.

Pay as you go cell phone
Try AT&T too. I have the monthly pre-paid plan. But, they also have a $2 per day plan and you only pay the $2 on the day you use it. They also have a 25-cent per minute plan. You have to put money on the phone and then renew it every so often or you lose the money.
Out of curiosity, I just did the online chat with the AT&T rep and she said you can just put $2 on your phone and then at least every 3 months renew it (or after you've used it).
I sometimes feel like the reps don't know the details on the no-frills plans because they want to sell the expensive ones. So, keep asking until you find someone who know what they're talking about.
Good luck!

Husband and I use Tracfone as well. We got ours from HSN I believe. For $99 we got a smart phone and an airtime card that was good for a year with 1500 min & texts and 1.5 GB data. It was the best deal. Usually when we are up we just buy the current $99 deal and are good to go. We have been using these phones for about 5 years and have no complaints. We transfer what is left on one phone to the new phone and keep the same numbers. Definitely one of the best deals out there and they run on verizon towers.

Thank you. This looks like something they are looking for. The phone will hardly ever be used.

$2 per month to keep it connected, and $2 per day on any day you happen to use it. Unlimited minutes and texts on $2 days. You'll wind up paying $2 for a wrong number or text, but that shouldn't happen very often.
