Waking up to yet another mass shooting
Just another day in America. Sad that we live in a society where this is just so common

This is horrible. As a left leaning liberal I do not think gun control is the problem though. I dont know what is. People need healing i guess.

Honestly, when you have a society that doesn't want to rock the boat, this is what happens.
Even on this board, we have been told we shouldn't discuss politics on the front page so people "don't get upset."
The world is on fire. Good luck to our children. Shame on us.

What does this mean?
Our government is bought and paid for. Bottom line. They don't work for us, they work for the gun industry and money is the most important factor.

Yep. Sadly the NRA runs this country.

Waking up to yet another mass shooting
The problem is lack of mental health funding and resources. Until that changes these incidents will continue to happen

Yes this as well. So this guy was a Marine. So he probably legally owned his guns. You can ban all guns- and while yes, I really believe we need better gun laws in this country- without a doubt- but people will still get them regardless. On the black market, steal them, whatever.
Heroin is illegal- people still get their hands on it every day.
It's more than just a gun law issue.

And a government who is incentivized to work FOR the gun industry sure as hell isn't increasing funding for mental health reform.
When the new normal borders on the insane, it's easy to see the safety of conspiracy theories to restore a sense of order.

Re: Waking up to yet another mass shooting
I just read this in a NYT article:
"The shooting came just over a year after 58 people were killed at a country music festival in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire from a high-rise hotel room. There was an eerie parallel between the two shootings as some of the same people who emerged from the bar, the Borderline Bar & Grill, described having survived the shooting on the Las Vegas Strip."
CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE??? As if once isn't awful enough! I would never leave the house!
I honestly don't know what the solution to the problem is. Access to and better mental health care for sure and restrictions on accessories for guns, its a start, but I don't know what would be the solution.

When the guy is white its a mental heath issue. When he is brown and muslim he is a terrorist. Thats the problem right there. I know with this mos recent guy we dont know if had a political motive or not...

Defining it as a race issue doesn't help find a solution. Terrorism is a different battle to stop that many of us cant control. However mental health resources are vital in local communities to identity people who need help before it gets to this level, regardless of their color.
I think you are in the same area of Queens as I am, have you seen the direct results of the NYS cuts in mental health funding right outside of Creedmore? People who used to be in patient are now out patient roaming the local streets out of their minds with no one controlling their meds...

agreed.
At least if they can do something like they aren't trying to crack down opiods. I know you can't sut the problem. but maybe crack down on it...
A data base where you buy ammo maybe?? Like the Vegas shooter had 1000s of rounds of ammunition. When he purchased it over a period of time, where ever he bought it from, should have sent a red flag... Like why would someone need that much ammo...
But then again if nothing changed after Sandy Hook... I don't think it will ever change.
Eventually more and more people will just be numb to it and just see mass shooting as another news story.

It doesn't help with a solution but her point is valid. How do we even know this event was a cause of mental health issues and not some person with radical views? And if the latter is the case, better Mental Healthcare system would not have prevented this.

It could be both. He served two or three tours. He had ptsd.

I am not denying that mental health issues are on the rise and our system is screwed up. I was just pointing out that we are quick to say it’s mental health when the person is white.
