Refresh me: what do I do with infant car seat when flying?

Ok, it’s been 6 years and I don’t remember how I traveled with my oldest daughter when she was an infant.

We are playing to fly to Florida for the holidays with my 6 year old and infant. Once we get off the plane we are renting a car. If I bring my infant car seat with us, how does that work? Can you install an infant seat in a car without the infant base? I don’t remember how I did it years ago.

Is it better to rent a car with a car seat installed? Do I check my infant seat at the airport? I vaguely remember wearing my daughter in a carrier and checking the seat...? But maybe not?

You have options. I’m assuming you didn’t buy your youngest a seat? If not you’ll have to gate check the infant car seat. You can install an infant car seat without the base by using the seatbelt. Or your other option is to just rent one with your rental car. I personally find them gross tho and much prefer to bring my own.

When our girls were that little I would wear them through the airport. You just can’t wear them during take off and landing.

if you didn't buy a seat for the 6 month old, she will be on your lap for the plane. if that's the case, you just check the car seat when you get there and they won't charge you. I prefer to bring my own and install it in the rental car
