What kind of things would you bring to someone in the hospital?
So, SO is in the hospital. I won’t get into why for privacy reasons. He’ll be fine. I just have to do all the talking with the doctors because he’s kind of out of it.
I think he will be there for a few days. I tried to prep him for this. I brought him to after hours yesterday, and they said he was OK, but this morning he told me he needed to go to the hospital. I then called an ambulance and I went with him there. I stayed, then I went home for a bit and returned later on in the evening.
He really wants to come home and he isn’t the best patient. I’m constantly having to get the nurse for him.
Anyway, here they don’t give you much in the hospital here. They give you food, but no gowns or anything like that. Oddly enough, they have smoking rooms in the hospital. He smokes, so this is why I know this.
I go back tomorrow morning, so I can talk to the doctors. In addition to this I have packed a bag for him.
I packed: His cell phone and chargers. PJs Deodorant Toothbrush and toothpaste Change of clothes for him A book Shampoo (he doesn’t need a comb).
Can you think of anything I’m missing? He doesn’t want food.

i'm sorry he's in the hospital. i hope he recovers quickly.
the only thing i can think of would be socks/slippers.
ps. i understand about hospitals not providing much. it's the same in the dominican republic. you have to bring your own sheets, even.
my grandmother (93) has a duffel bag ready for whenever she might have to go to the hospital... she's in perfect health, but she likes to be prepared.

Slippers packed! He does love his slippers. Socks are also packed.
They give you sheets here and comfy blankets. But it blows my mind that they don’t do much else. He’s in a ward with 5 other people and they don’t even have curtains. The medical care is good, though. I guess that’s what counts.

Headphones Cigarettes (if he’s allowed to smoke while recovering, then why deprive him of it — and if he isn’t allowed then maybe a nicotine patch or gum so he isn’t dealing with nicotine withdrawal) If he uses any specific face wash, that would be helpful. Any soap in the hospital can be so drying! Razor and shaving cream?

Soap packed! I’m pretty sure they have towels there. Maybe I should pack one just in case?
He won’t shave in the hospital. But I’ll ask him tomorrow if he wants me to bring it. I have to pick up cigarettes on the way tomorrow. I hate giving him that, but he has so much else to deal with. That was one thing he requested. One thing at a time. He’s allowed to smoke, which I almost cannot believe that they allow smoking in hospitals here. I even saw a patient requesting a cigarette. Mind blown.

I think you've got it covered - I wasn't allowed to use any shampoo or soap from home when I was in the hospital earlier this year so I would check (I had surgical complications though so I think they were being protective with my wounds).

With so many people in 1 room: Ear plugs Night Mask
Other ideas: Mints/Lollipops (if he's not eating he may feel dry mouth) lip balm newspaper/magazine/tablet (to pass time) hand sanitizer

Thank you everyone. I have his bag packed. I think he will be fine. There was no surgery. I’ll be there early in the morning.

Make sure to get an extra extra long phone charger wire so he can use it while it’s charging in the wall.

Prayers for a speedy recovery!! A throw blanket (one of those really soft ones, Kohl’s has them) When I’m out of surgery I always get a new throw blanket, it’s just my thing but I love them and find them comforting

Good food, depending on what he’s allowed to eat. Hospital food is often awful.

Re: What kind of things would you bring to someone in the hospital?
Thank you all! The food isn’t that bad here. They gave a cheese platter with nice bread for dinner.
He should be out by tomorrow. I’m meeting up with his brother and mother tomorrow. I’ve never met his mother. I’m a bit worried about that because she has never met a GF of his before. But my BF said that she would be happy that I took care of him.
The slippers and fresh soap were a hit. He also loved the book.
I don’t mind getting up, but it’s getting exhausting staying at the hospital for 8 hour stretches. I also find the ward very exhausting. Watching 5 people being sick (and no curtains) is a bit frightening.

I’m a bit shocked at the no curtains
There’s zero privacy. Any idea why there are no curtains?

At the GYN here you get no robe either. You just strip down and they check everything out. I have no idea why they do this.
They separate the men from the women. I was asked to leave a few times when a new patient came in. But they never asked my SO to leave. I’ve been in the ER at this hospital and I had a curtain, but it really wasn’t so private.
Another thing they did that was really strange is they put the food on a table by the window and you have to go get it yourself. You also have to put it in the rack when you are done. And the nurses were not very good. I needed something for him, but because it was switch over time I could not get a nurse.
He’s out now. His mom and brother came to visit today. First time meeting his mom went well. She knows all the details about him and she will be taking care of him for a bit because it’s closer to his home (on the border). I’m just exhausted from the hospital.
ETA: his mom and brother said there are normally curtains, but I didn’t see any when I passed by the rooms. Just rooms with 4-6 beds and no curtains.

Wow! I know we all complain about hospitals and care here, but I guess we do have it pretty good compared to there!

Re: What kind of things would you bring to someone in the hospital?
Shoes for the shower if he is allowed to shower, nice towel (but one you won’t miss either if it gets lost/yucky).
Pad and pen if he able to write so he can write down questions he might have for the drs and nurses when they come around and he won’t forget/he can write things they say to him.
