retaining an attorney
We need one for a very specific dispute and so far we've contacted 2 firms; the first one was going to send us a retainer agreement and never did so after a week I emailed back asking what the status was; he was busy. Ok we moved on, contacted a second firm, they asked me to email a document they wanted to see, I did, and I haven't heard back (it was sent to them Friday and it was a holiday weekend but...). I just sent them a follow up email.
This is the first time i've needed to retain an attorney; is this the norm when it comes to the initial communication? I feel like why am I chasing them down to give them money? And these are Manhattan firms, not cheap.

I think if they wanted your business they would have followed up.
GL, I know two firms that were very helpful to me. Not sure what you need them for

That is not normal. It says to me they don't want to work with you.

Re: retaining an attorney
They probably don't want to take your case. Not profitable or winnable for them. What is this for?

This exactly. If they asked to see something pertaining to the case and haven't contacted you it means they don't think there's anything there or it's not going to be worth the hassle for them. Don't be surprised to get a letter from them in the mail telling you that they do not represent you in your case.

This. I work for attorneys, if they think it will be profitable then they will jump on it.
Also, even though you are going to be paying, if it is a difficult or time consuming matter they aren't familiar in, then that plays a factor too.

thanks I figured it wasn't the norm.
We specifically sought out firms that deal with Mitchell Lama co ops in the city as we are having an issue with ours and it's management.
