Settle a debate about lit candles on a Christmas tree
SO’s family puts lit candles on a Christmas tree instead of lights. I find this very, very strange. I told him this and he looked at me like I had two heads and said, well, as long is someone in the room, then there is no problem.
I just wanted to scream, hello fire hazard!
They usually only do the candles on Xmas Eve, but still!
Does anyone else do lit candles on their Xmas tree?

Absolutely not! My dad was a firefighter and fought many fires caused by dry, brittle Christmas tree branches and candles.

Settle a debate about lit candles on a Christmas tree
I can’t even picture how to place lit candles on a Christmas tree without starting a fire immediately!

No, but I knew it was a German thing. My ex bf was German and I remember his grandmother telling me how when she was a child they used to light candles on the tree and what a fire hazard it was. We was very much tied to her culture (as was her husband) but they never dreamed of doing that once they had their own tree. They thought it was nuts.

It’s a German thing, but it just blows my mind. SO still does it. I think they have a bucket of water to put out anything on the side.
All his Xmas photos have a picture of him in front of the lit candle tree. It makes me cringe.

I didn't know people still did this but this what used to be done. Very clearly an enormous fire hazard.

They have special candle holders and papers to collect the wax. It’s insane. I cannot believe they do this.

It't totally a european thing! Think of the Swedish holiday where girls where wreaths with candles on their heads! We used to have the holders on our tree but never actually lit them.
As for my opinoin...NO *****' way!!!
Haha, eta that e-f-f-i-n is starred out! lol.

back when i lived in washington heights (2000), we lived through a christmas tree fire. the house phone cord knocked over a pillar candle and it rolled under the christmas tree. that family lost BOTH their kids that night.
i won't even do a real tree any more because of what i saw that night.
all that to say...
HELL TO THE NO!!

Um, maybe in the 19th century. Doesn’t Olaf even make a joke about this tradition being unsafe in the Christmas special? In all seriousness it’s very dangerous. We even test out our strings of regular electrical lights to make sure they aren’t old/getting overheated before stringing them on our tree.

Re: Settle a debate about lit candles on a Christmas tree
I doubt anyone on here does that
It’s clearly a cultural thing, I’m curious do they not have higher rate of fires during this season or is there something they do to prevent it? I’m wondering how this is still a tradition in Germany or anywhere else in the world?

Re: Settle a debate about lit candles on a Christmas tree
my part German MIL has the little holders with real candles, but they are never lit. They use regular Christmas lights.
They have a cat too, so i feel like this would be a total disaster!
Also- when my husband & I were dating, his roommate bought a giant tree that barely fit in their LR, and halfway through watching a movie, the thing started to tip over on to me. Image if there were candles on it!

I would NEVER put REAL candles on my Xmas tree, that's a fire waiting to happen.

I guess it’s a cultural thing, but they sell lots of regular Xmas lights here.
I do not really hear of fires from this here. The rooms are well insulated with concrete.
Then again, I was in an Oktoberfest tent yesterday with thousands of people holding lit sparklers. I guess fire safety just isn’t a big thing here.
It’s just an accident waiting to happen.

I won’t even leave the lights turned on on my tree if I’m feeling a teensy bit sleepy.

Maybe back when Scrooge was getting visited back by 3 ghosts.
But no...
I do have bubble lights I put on the tree. But not real candles

Re: Settle a debate about lit candles on a Christmas tree
It is cultural and not many of us on here could relate to it. A better idea would be to ask other Germans to see how odd they think it is.
I do feel that when I was traveling in Germany several years ago, their safety precautions were definitely less stringent than I was used to in America. My friend who lived in Bavaria thought the reason is that Germans feel it is more the individual’s (vs the state’s) responsibility to ensure their safety.

I would never do that, but it sounds like that's something hes been doing his whole life, so of course it seems normal to him. If they only light the candles for one night and stay right next to the tree with a bucket of water.

Yes, I guess it is so old school. You have the candle clips though, so at least someone understands me.
I wonder what new cultural surprise awaits me.
My other friends do not do this.

Yes, I understand that mentality. I mean they shoot fireworks with no protection at all on NYE. Picture fireworks being shot off in a crowd. Yeah, that’s what they do.
On the other hand, they are very safe with other things. I just don’t get it.
