Tree Trimming Etiquette-Settle a debate
We'll be having some trees cut down and others trimmed, but there are several that have grown on our property line and the majority of the trees hang on our side.
I know we are able to cut/trim what is on our side of the fence but if we were to trim the ones that hang on our side there would pretty much be a trunk left with very little greenery.
Our backyard is pretty much full shade all day and there are also several dead branches of these tress hanging over our house, so leaving the tress in question isn't an option.
Should we alert our neighbors we plan on trimming those tress? Or just go ahead with trimming/taking down trees and say nothing since we're trimming what we're 'allowed'
DH and I have different answers for this one. Help settle the debate.

don't ask, just tell them that you will be trimming.
no need to get permission. but i'd definitely just fyi them.

DEF tell them. there were some very very heated debates about this on my block. the offended party was super super pizzed that someone else cut their trees without a simple heads up. id do it just as a courtesy. you never know what will set off a neighbor...

You should get the opinion of a good arborist before you start having trees hacked up too. If you remove to many branches, especially on one side only, I'm pretty certain you're hurting the stability of the tree. If it's right on the property line you might want to talk to the neighbor about taking it down entirely.

I would tell them. They may say they don't want the tree anyway, and to just take it down completely. If you hack the tree, it will probably die, then you'll have a dead tree trunk leaning towards your property, and if it falls, it will probably fall on your side...

You don't need their permission, but out of courtesty, since it is on property line, I would just let them know you are doing this.
