Re: Celiac Disease question..
https://celiac.org/celiac-disease/understanding-celiac-disease-2/diagnosing-celiac-disease/
... Screening There are several serologic (blood) tests available that screen for celiac disease antibodies, but the most commonly used is called a tTG-IgA test. For this test to work, you must be consuming gluten. If blood test results suggest celiac disease, your physician will recommend a biopsy of your small intestine to confirm the diagnosis.
People with celiac disease carry one or both of the HLA DQ2 and DQ8 genes. So do up to 40% of all people. Carrying HLA DQ2 and/or DQ8 is not a diagnosis of celiac disease nor does it mean you will ever develop celiac disease. However, if you are on a gluten-free diet or are a first-degree family member of someone with celiac disease (parent, sibling, child), genetic testing can help to rule out if you will ever develop celiac disease. ...
The blood tests aren't definitive, one way or the other. Just an indicator. You can also have non-celiac gluten or fructen sensitivity, which won't show up on most tests.

Celiac Disease question..
Diagnosis is confirmed through biopsy of small intestines after blood work.

Re: Celiac Disease question..
Both of my kids had the blood tests done which showed their levels off the charts- we decided not to move forward with the biopsy because we thought it too invasive however, that is how you get the official diagnosis. For now we just keep them GF.

Hi just curious what your kids follow up is like? Do they follow up with the GI doc? Blood work at all? My son had positive blood work last year but the biopsy was negative. We are following up with blood work right now 6 months after our last visit. Our doc wouldn't give a diagnosis without the biopsy.

Celiac Disease question..
The blood tests aren’t always definitive, my sister’s blood work came back negative, biopsy and intestinal damage confirmed celiac diagnosis.

Re: Celiac Disease question..
My daughters blood test was positive. Genetic testing was done which showed negative. Not sure what to make of that.... We would need to do the endoscopy to confirm and I don't want to do as I think too evasive.

I've heard you cant have it if you don't have the gene. My son had an endoscopy. We didn't feel like it would be too invasive. It's a very quick procedure. We were in and out the hospital pretty quickly. I wanted to be sure of the diagnosis before starting a diet that would be a lifetime and difficult to follow. My son didn't have the genetic test but I did and I carry one of the pairs of genes.

Re: Celiac Disease question..
blood tests typically arent reliable for this. you need a genetic test done.
I've had food allergy testing with my naturopath. it was Alcat Cell Science systems. might be something your dr. can order for you.

Yes we did one follow up visit with the GI where we told him we did not want to pursue additional testing. We just keep them GF and then we put on their school forms that they have a gluten allergy.
