Cleaning washing machine

Unbeknownst to me, my dd put a little conch seashell in our beach bag while we were on vacation and it must have still had sea life in it. All the contents of the beach bag stunk! I washed everything with baking soda detergent and actually the smell came out of everything but the beach bag (tossed), but now my washing machine smells like dead seafood. We ran it through the cleaning cycle with one of those cleaning tablets and it didn’t work. Now I have it going with baking soda and vinegar but I’m worried that might not work either. Any other ideas? Do I keep doing baking soda/vinegar cycles over and over again? It’s a top load if it matters.

Re: Cleaning washing machine

Leave out the baking soda and just do vinegar and hot water. Throw in an old towel too.

I just do bleach in my washing machine. I have a setting that says "clean washer with affresh" but I just clean it with bleach (pour it in the bleach dispenser)...

I saw in Target just last night, Oxy clean now makes these tablets/powder that is made just to clean your washer, not clothes.

Re: Cleaning washing machine

Thanks - it would have never occurred to me to throw a towel in there with anything so I’ll dk thr vigenar with a towel first. And if that doesn’t work try bleach. You guys are so much better than the internet lol!

Re: Cleaning washing machine

I would try the baking soda / vinegar with a towel to absorb any scent. If that doesn’t work try Lestoil (just a bit). I used to use that on my kitchen clothes when I worked in a kitchen (you pick up so many scents from there!).

Do you put the vinegar in the drum or in the soap dispenser?

Re: Cleaning washing machine

I did vinegar in the drum with a towel and it worked amazingly well! Definitely better than the vinegar with baking soda. Thanks again!
