Tonsils and adenoids removed

Both my kids will be having their tonsils and adenoids out next week. They are 8 and 9 and I am freaking out. I had no doubt in my mind that I wanted this procedure done for the both of them. They both get frequent strep throat, ear infections and snore. They also have sleep apnea. I was hoping it would get better as they got older but it’s only gotten worst. I keep telling myself that this is the best decision for them but my anxiety is getting the best of me. What an I expect the day of, when we come home, etc? Any advice please. I’m losing it.

Tonsils and adenoids removed

I had them out at 7 or 8 and I remember being grumpy and having a really sore throat. I wanted ice pops and jello, and applesauce. That was my diet for a while.

My son was 8 when he had his out. He has a bleeding disorder, so had to stay overnight after. Definitely stay on top of the pain medicine. He would wake up and be in pain! The first day was okay because of the IV drugs, but the 2nd day was pretty bad. It was about 10 days until he was pretty much himself again.

My son was around 3 when he had it so it was different since he couldn't tell us what he needed, but I agree to stay on top of (ahead of) the pain meds, especially in the first few days.

Anything cold seemed to be good, and they don't all have to be junk food - smoothies, applesauce, etc. My kid also wanted mashed potatoes. :D

We had a similar experience when my son had them out at 2.5. It took days before he was willing to eat anything, including a popsicle, and I could only get him to drink once pain medication started setting in. As tough as the recovery was, it was worth it. He slept better, his breathing was much quieter and he went 18 months without an ear infection and rarely gets them now.

My dd lived on yogurt drinks. I laced those with ibuprofen for 2 weeks every 4-6hrs. Day 7-9 are the worst as that’s when the scabs fall off.

Thanks for the info. Do the scabs fall off in one shot or little by little? How many days are they in terrible pain? Watching them in pain is what worries me the most.

They fall off little by little. The worse will be about day 3, pain moves into the ears. I had them out at 19 and it was horrible, my brother was like 6-7 years old and was eating spicy potatoes by day 4. The older you get the harder the recovery. Lots of ice and jello!

I heard it will be a tough 2 week recovery. Expect 14 days of hell.

Keep the ice cream, jello, etc. STOCKED

and keep the DVDs playing LOL!!!
