Asking to see a different dr in specialty practice
Has anyone gone to a doctor in a specialty practice and years later wanted to go back but see a different doctor in that practice? Is it awkward as these doctors work together and it could be uncomfortable as the same original doctor is still there? If anyone did this, how did they handle it or am I making too big a deal of this?

If it's been years the original doctor probably won't even remember you. They see so many patients.

I don’t think it’s awkward, people do it all the time.
However, if you are looking for a different medical opinion for the same issue, I would choose a different practice altogether.

Re: Asking to see a different dr in specialty practice
I actually did that not long ago. I went to one ENT and then went to a different ENT in the practice about 4 months later. I told the second one straight up that I was seeking a second opinion. His response to me was "Well I'm glad you came here. I know Dr. ___ would be totally fine knowing that you wanted another opinion and would be happy that you entrusted this group to provide you with the second opinion." He was really great about it. Honestly, egos aside, if you keep bringing the business there, what do they care?

Doctors in the same practice very rarely go against each other so it usually isn’t a true second opinion.

Yeah this sounds about right. DH was seeing an ENT and they would treat him for a reoccurring issue. He saw 4 ENTs at the one practice (because they would fit him in with whichever doctor was free that day), they all agreed with the first doctor. They would read the first doctors notes in his file and just agree with whatever was written there. When our insurance changed, he started at a new practice. They said something completely different. They were actually able to fix his problem.

I wouldn't feel awkward. I would just call and ask for an appointment with the doctor I want to see. But as others have said, it might not be good for a second opinion.

Re: Asking to see a different dr in specialty practice
They really won’t care if you see another Dr within the practice, especially if it has been years. They likely won’t remember.
If is is a second opinion but literally years apart from the first one, they should be able to give you a legit second opinion. A lot changes in years so that is a huge factor medically to consider. This is physician dependent how they would handle this but a good one will re-examin all of the data especially if the same condition is present years later.
