I had a fake ID when I was that age. I was “Cynthia.” I would just have a discussion about not drinking and driving.

Getting arrested wouldn’t really be a concern, and just tell her, hey, show your real ID.

We all did things like this.

I was Cammie.
Cammie's license was expired too but I chalked the expiration date. The licenses were like a yellowy color back then and so much easier to manipulate.
It worked about half the time, maybe more.
One time I got caught because I was wearing one of those diamond name plates that was so popular back then and it had my real name on it. The bouncer called me out on that one!
After that I always remembered to tuck that into my shirt when showing my ID! Chat Icon
Ah, the good old days.

I found an unexpired ID at a restaurant I worked at. I looked like the person in the photo, so that was OK. I would also use my sister’s ID sometimes at Malibu.

Then one day I went with a friend to another bar and the bouncer is what’s her name, and she told my real name (not Cynthia). I was like, really? We got turned away at the door.

ETA: I never had the skills to chalk.

Can someone remind me how chalking was done? I recall an old boyfriend giving me a chalked ID (which didn't work) - is it actual chalk that was somehow supposed to cover the info printed on the ID? Chat Icon Now that i'm thinking about it, i'm curious how this ever could have worked Chat Icon

Well, I think you could chalk it when it was red and change the date. Then you could could write over it with red marker. Again, I was horrible at this, and it never worked for me.

I wouldn't be happy but I would accept that everyone does it. I had a fake ID too but I never drank - I basically used it just to get into bars.

Don't be naive to think she can only get in trouble trying to get into a bar or liquor store with a fake ID.
She carries the fake with her right? If she were to get stopped or even be a passenger in a car that was stopped for a simple MV issue the police might find it that way. And there's a good chance she would/could be arrested.
She just needs to accept whatever consequences follow if she were to get caught.

My neice was a back seat passenger with 3 other girls who all had fakes. They were stopped for a light out. The cops saw the fake and the 3 girls were arrested. They even towed the car away. My neice did not have a fake but got a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. The other girls all had to hire lawyers. They eventually got off but it cost them $$$. My neice was the only one that had to pay her ticket for no seatbelt.

How did the cop see the fake?
Did they accidentally show it to the cop instead of their real licenses?

They were driving one of the girls grandmothers car. I don't remember all the details but the police were giving them a hard time and said they smelled pot. They searched the car didn't come up with any pot but did find a bag with the fake ID's...

That’s tough because she obviously trusts you not to give her a hard time about it. But it is illegal. And could lead to trouble for her. And i can say I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I found a fake Id on my kid.

The old NYS Licenses were in the old school typewriter font. I was born in 73 so it was easy to take a white and yellow pencil and cover the middle of the 3 and black pen to close the number to make a zero. You then take spray fixative and cover so it could rub off. Any art student had these supplies readily available. It was beyond easy on the old licenses

Re: How would you react to this?

I think she needs to accept the risks and make her own decisions on this.

It’s something most of us do and you forbidding or taking it away will likely not work. I don’t even think it’s so bad. I think making drinking so taboo leads to bad choices or kids trying to be cool. I hope my kids learn to have a healthy relationship with alcohol - more like Europe than America....

Really drive home the no drinking and driving. Uber really helps these kids have an easy alternative. She needs to know she has a full get out of jail free card to call you if she’s ever in a jam. Punishing her for this I think would make her question that .....

I had a fake in college I shared with a friend. I’m a very high functioning adult.

However, I did get caught underage drinking at a tailgate when I was 18 or 19. The town was insane and mandated court and a 500 ticket. Plus I had to pay 150 for the train to appear. My parents made me pay it (of course, there was no discussion). My dad came with me. I was so upset. He was supportive which is what I needed. The judge lectured me. I cried. My dad made me laugh afterwards by trying to take me to a tavern for lunch. Thing is, I was a good smart kid. I just made a dumb choice. I paid the price and life went on.

I would let her know it’s a felony and if she gets caught that will jeopardize her future potentially. I mean all you can do is educate her and hope she makes good choices. But to me, once they reach 18, you can’t coddle and bail them out or else they will never learn, but they still need guidance at times and may not be aware it is a serious issue. I had one in college as did my roommates (this is 10 years ago) and my roommates went out one night and I was home sick. I woke up to find out they all got arrested for the fake ids (we went to school in CT) I was 19 at the time, needless to say, I never went to a bar again until I was of age

I used white colored pencil to "chalk" my ID. It was a little distorted but most of the time they never gave it a second glance. Honestly, I rarely got carded since we went to.. ahem... lower quality establishments where they didn't care.

I’d ask her what she uses it for.. clubs and bigger liquor stores have the scanners, so if she tries it there, she’s getting arrested.. if she uses it at mom and pop places she should be fine..

As someone who had one, I didn’t get caught, but I wasn’t naive enough to use it anywhere. So make sure she’s ready for the consequences, but ultimately if she’s a good kid, I’d let her make her own mistakes. But I only have a 9 YO, so my advice probably isn’t the best, so keep that in mind Chat Icon

Would a liquor store actually call the cops on an underage kid trying to use fake ID? I would think they would deny them the sale and tell them to get lost but to call the cops? Seems a bit harsh.

after reading this I warned her about the liquor store lol

From what she tells me she says college bars is what its for. she said most kids had one in her first year, shes going on her second. I know I have to just trust her, and hope I brought her up to make good decisions.

I was so not a kid that got into trouble and even I had one in college. This was before scanners so any id worked at a small town college bar. Looking back, the biggest thing I would worry about was putting yourself in a vulnerable position while you're drunk. I think I would have frequent conversations about all the what ifs and how not to end up in a bad situation. Chat Icon

she opened up in 12th grade that the parties in high school had alcohol(parents actually supplied!!) so we talked about designated drivers and being safe. Once she went away to school and she said every weekend were parties, I had the lecture about the turning your head for a second and someone slipping drugs, watching your drink at all times. she says I am a bit overbearing lol

I think it would depend on the liquor store and if the person was intoxicated. The dram shop law is no joke. I know when I worked in restaurants and had to check IDs, I always went to a manager and checked with them if it was questionable. They would then go to a book and check all different IDs in different states and countries. If there was a problem, then the manager went over and talked to them. They never took away the fake ID, but if the person was intoxicated, they would say they should leave.

After all, they don’t want to lose their liquor license, and I believe I could have gotten into a lot of trouble as well. I did an alcohol serving safely class as part of my job.

I think another thing to stress is drinking out in public. I was over 21 and had a beer in a paper bag in the city outside of a concert. I didn’t even get a ticket. Instead, I had to go to court and had to take a “quality of life” class about why what I did was so wrong. I would imagine if she got caught underage, it would be a lot worse.

How would you react to this?

I had a fake ID younger than that so I would be a hypocrite to be angry. You say she is a good kid who does well in school, I was the same way, my parents would not have been happy to know I had a fake ID but since I went away to college at 17 I think they sort of assumed but who knows. I would not be angry personally she is 19.5 if she were 16 maybe

in all likelihood (like most kids at college) she already has access to drinking in the dorms or at parties, supplied by other kids. if she wants to drink, she doesn't need the ID to do so. i think as long as she knows about the potential legal implications of using a fake, all you can do is educate her about watching her drink, being around people she trusts and hopes she makes the right decisions.
