Does anyone use these and have evidence based research to support they are effective in helping with breathing better? And where can I go to further read the research? I’m not interested in something that has no scientific evidence of effectiveness because to me without it, there are just claims of others saying it works. Long story short, this is my 17 month old has been hospitalized and admitted 5x since September for severe asthma. He’s on 2 medications daily but will have an attack with or without having a cold. Thursday I had to call 911 because even after piggybacking on albuterol, he began to turn blue. He was admitted to stony brook and we had excellent care and we had tons of parent education (most of which we knew but were given better strategies to give him medication effectively etc) he is followed by a pulmonologist as well. We are having him retested for allergies on Friday. I have central air and we had the system santizied last night. I do have carpet which we plan to rip up, our den is half above half below (split level) so we would like to keep carpet down there so we are having him tested for any allergies associated with carpet before ripping and replacing. He’s on 2 medications and I feel we already limit exposure to everything (smoking, heat, outdoor allergies, we don’t use aerosol cans etc) I’m just not sure what else we can do (going for a 3rd pulmonologist opinion). I have a little oil diffuser that I use just for the scent but I’m being told any scents can be a trigger now too. So is there any evidence behind breath blend oils and the salt lamp? Anything I can add to his environment or remove from the environment I will. I can’t do this again....

Essential oils/ salt lamps

Can't speak about proof but we use both. The salt lamps are very pretty but I'm not sure they actually do anything. They emit a very soothing glow. I don't think it would hurt if you would use it as a nightlight.

As for the oils, we had purchased a Vicks plug in years ago when my DS had a cold. It uses pads soaked in oils. We use our own pads in it and use peppermint, camphor and eucalyptus oils on them. They definitely help with his breathing whenever he has a respiratory issue. And they smell great! Again, no scientific proof but it is inexpensive and won't hurt if you decide to try it. We do not use the diffuser in his room. I do use one in my room.

FWIW, sorry I could not provide scientific proof. I'm sure it's out there proving they work and others proving they don't, just like everything else. Neither is costly and might be worth a try in addition to the other therapies you are using.

There is absolutely no scientific proof of either. In fact, some essential oils should not be used with small children.

I'm so sorry this is happening. Hopefully his meds can get him under control. Poor little nugget.

Thanks! I figured it was a long shot and I know next to nothing about them but see all over how great the essential oils are, I thought I was just misinformed and didn’t know enough about them, which I definitely don’t but I didn’t know if there was any scientific proof. I won’t even consider anything without evidence based research because I would just be wasting my time, his time, my money and it won’t be effective and I wouldn’t want to do more harm then good. I’m just so beside myself with trying to find what will help him. But we have done medication through the inhaler with static chamber, the nebulizer with the mask and blowby for delivery and nothing is helping. They feel it’s a combination of the severity of asthma, chronic ear infections, allergins which we haven’t identified yet and ineffective medication delivery. But this weekend he received 4 decadron (spelling) and this is now 14 total since september which is pretty concerning

I am very natural and holistic but essential oils should never be used in children under two. Can have the reverse effect and actually CAUSE breathing problems. I am not a doctor but my 5yo has asthma and was sick the entire year she was 2. Longgggg story short after her ped was like I don’t know what to do go to LIJ and they were confused too, I turned to natural doctors. All out of pocket. Went to 4-5, spent thousands and it WORKED for us.

I was very upset hearing it at the time and don’t know how I would do it but I did. Every. Single. Doctor. Said the same thing. Cut our dairy and wheat and put her on a paleo diet, my 2yo! I cried in the office and was like she eats organic and he’s like okay processed organic goldfish crackers aren’t helping.

He said your body is like a bank, you can take money out if you have it. And she doesn’t. So for 3mos paleo diet. It was so easy, and guess what I slowly introduced wheat in around month 4 and she was fine. Then dairy and it seemed to make her start to cough so I waited a bit longer. From age 3-5 years and 2mos she was not sick once!

The whole time I did the paleo diet she was on qVar, I tapered her off though. And she’s been on nothing since then. Any questions PM me.

I have to agree. I love using good quality essential oils but u do have to be careful with them and small children, especially if they’re difused in small rooms, for long periods of time (which is not even a good idea for adults either), or applied topically. The safer ones are lavender, chamomile, frankincense, among others, but even then u have to be very careful and conscious about using them. It’s such a shame that even though EO have been used for centuries, there’s no extensive scientific studies on them. Hopefully with all the popularity they’re getting, this will change soon.

I also agree that diet might also have something to do with the astha. Yes, sometimes it has to do with things we’re exposed to externally but it can also be internally and a lot of the times ppl don’t even suspect it. Dairy and wheat are the main culprits, not because of what they actually are but because of either how they’ve been produced/processed, the immature digestive system of a child, or it can even be a combination of both. Just like Leb suggested, eliminating them from her diet would be kinda like pressing reset in her system. Allowing enough time for her gut to mature, heal, and then slowly reintroduce each food and see how she reacts. It’s incredible to know how connected our gut is with other parts of the body, it’s the center of everything! Also if u decide to eliminate certain categories of food, make sure to do it thoroughly even the hidden ones and if u decide to reintroduce them, try to choose for better qualities, like raw milk, pasture raised/grass fed products for dairy/meat/eggs, einkorn flour, etc.

Oh and it’s such a shame that holistic doctors are not cover by insurances! They’re very knowledgeable and treat the root of a problem instead of putting a “band aid” on it unlike other doctors!

I also want to add if you have pets to be very careful with diffusing oils. Lavender oil can be deadly to them.

Thanks! I have a little diffuser with lavender in my den, it’s very open and I don’t use it often, I just like the scent but we got rid of it after doing more research. He’s going to the allergist tomorrow for testing. Thanks everyone!

I’ve never heard or read about this. I have a chihuahua and a Pit/Lab mix, I diffuse and also clean with lavender EO and have never had any problems. I’m gonna look more into it.

Insurance will not cover anything that has zero proof it works.

The OP was asking for “evidence based” research. This is the polar opposite of that.

You do you, but that is an extremely misinformed and potentially dangerous thing to say.

U’re welcome! Chat Icon good luck and let us know how everything goes. Lavender has great health benefits, it’s one of my favorites to use, and my husband loves dispersing it in his bath if he’s had a hard day at work. I’d just suggest to get a good quality EO, this can make a huge difference! There are a few companies that produce great quality at affordable prices, like Plant Theraphy, Edens Garden, etc.

I was just adding my thoughts about a previous comment. No where in that paragraph u quoted, I suggest her seeing a holistic doctor. And even if that was the case, a suggestion is a suggestion, and every person should do their own research and then decide what’s best for them to do.

Oh and let’s not talk about what and what not insurances cover, if they should or shouldn’t. Lots and lots to say about that and I don’t think there’s enough hrs in the day to talk about it.

Using Essential Oils Safely

I stand corrected, it looks like it is safe for dogs but not for cats.
