WWYD re: road trip
We are headed up to the Cape for 4th of July. We have to work on 7/3 so we will be leaving that night after work.
Would you think it's better traffic wise to just drive around or would you take the Orient Point ferry? I'm concerned about what the traffic would be like heading out east to the ferry. I don't know which way would be the easier way to travel.

Re: WWYD re: road trip
I enjoy taking the ferry, so I often choose that option. Depending on where you live on LI, it may not save you any travelling time, but it's an hour of relaxing, napping, surfing the web, etc, instead of driving.
Port Jeff ferry might be a good compromise. You avoid NYC, and you avoid any North Fork traffic.

Everything is going to suck, I would just pick which you think would be best and deal with it.

Same. I find it more relaxing than driving over the bridges and through NYC It's expensive and may not save you time, but worth it IMO

Re: WWYD re: road trip
I would take a late ferry and not try to get over either bridge anywhere near rush hour. My brother lives there and they don't travel onto or off cape on weekends or holidays.

I would be leaving from work in Smithtown. The Port Jeff ferry may not be a bad idea. That's not far.

Oh I know. I feel like we are going to making this 4 hour road trip a 12 hour extravaganza

I'm a big fan of this ferry. They basically leave every hour so if you get there early they'll let you on an earlier boat, etc. I remember having issues just getting reservations for the orient ferry bc it sold out.

Ferry. The traffic through the city will be a nightmare.

Re: WWYD re: road trip
I think no matter what you will hit traffic. The ferry is also expensive my DH looked into it to take to Connecticut and it was going to cost over $100 just for one way. Just something else to consider

Maybe it won't be so terrible since it falls on a Wednesday.

Re: WWYD re: road trip
Definitely take the ferry.
And I feel like unless you live way out east, the Port Jeff ferry gets you the biggest bang for your buck. Just make sure to get a reservations way ahead of time.

All of this. With the Port Jeff ferry you have to deal with CT traffic on the other side. I LOVE the Orient Point ferry and we use it a lot to get up to New England. The drive out on the fork is lovely and traffic free usually and the ferry ride is nice as well. Beats driving out of NY any day IMO.
