Anyone belong to a country club?
We do because my husband likes to golf. I play tennis there, but I play indoors throughout the year and don’t need the club for tennis. There is no pool, so we don’t hang out there all day. My son plays on their junior golf team and we enjoy some of the kids parties and BBQ’s. We’ve also held two Communion parties there that have been great.
It would not be worth it to me if my husband didn’t love golf so much.

We got a boat last year and joined Long Island yacht club. We dock there and use the facility all the time.
They have a tiki bar , huge pool, small beach, playground, tennis courts, etc. they have themed nights all season. Volley ball night, etc. they also have Sunday BBQs and night life parties in the indoor bar and catering room.
The whole season feels like we are on vacation. Was worth it for us. There are people who just join the club without a boat as well.
Edited to add: this particular club is very Laid back. Cool people. No mandatory monthly spending either. I know a lot of places can be a little uptight and you have to spend $ every month no matter what.
I was looking into joining this club, but wondered if it wasn't worth it due to the location. How big is the beach area? Do people actually sit there and go in the water? Is the pool overrun by kids?
The beach area is small. I sit there a lot and read. People take the paddle boards & kayaks out at the beach as well.
The pool isn't overrun by kids. There are kids there obviously, but they stay towards the shallow end on the other side where the shaded chairs are (that's where most of the moms w small kids stay) There is a lifeguard there and when people want to do some laps, they tend to keep the kids out of a lane or 2 so adults can swim. I don't have kids and I enjoy the pool area.
I think it's worth it BECAUSE of the location. We are in the next town over. Every time we drive down the path to the club, it's like driving to a vacation but it only took us 5 minutes to get there. They just had an open house but if you call, you can take a tour and find out all about it. We really enjoy it there. my DH signed us back up in November as soon as we pulled our boat lol
Edited to add: there’s another open house Sunday April 29th .. from their FB Page :
Open House! Come meet the LIYC Sunday 4/29 from 11am - 3pm for information on Membership, Catering, Boating, our Youth Programs and more.
631-669-3270 * [email protected] * www.liyc.com
Thanks for the details. I knew of the open house and was thinking to go. But I wanted some real perspective and not the perspective of a sales person.

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?
DH and I toss around the idea of joining the Elks in our town. They have a great pool and it's inexpensive. But there's that whole people thing which neither of us are a fan of.

This is exactly why we decided to get a pool years ago. We figured it was a great investment for us because we really don't care to be around other people. So we can hide back there all summer in peace!

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?
There are two different types of country clubs. Corporate owned clubs and member owned clubs.
Member owned clubs operate like coops, the members manage the operations of the club and their dues go to the operation of the club. These types of clubs are also considered non-profit. Member owned clubs are more exclusive, more expensive to join, and some require sponsorship. The big issue I found with members only clubs are high food minimums in general and if any capital improvements needed to be done they ask the members for assessments (like coops).
Corporate owned clubs are corporate owned for profit clubs. There is a monthly fee to join. Sometimes a food/beverage minimum. But at that point that's it. What you contract for the year is what you pay.
I looked at the Hamlet Country Club in Commack and was considering joining that. They had a decent under 45 rate of $9800 or something along those lines. They have a pool with is a plus. My kid loves the pool but my wife doesn't golf, so its a little tough to justify the cost. I might do it next year or when my almost three year old is a little older so he can come out onto the golf course with me. We looked at a few other clubs like Colonial Springs which is just golf and social, no pool. No pool doesn't work for me.
When checking with clubs, see if there are cheaper rates if you are under 45.

Just curious- why is it cheaper to join if you are younger?

I think it’s because they are trying to garner membership from a younger crowd with hopes that it continues through the years.
Yes, this would be a member-owned country club. After reading these responses and giving it more thought Indont think joining would be good use of our hard earned miney. Now only to convince DH!! Thanks for all of the responses!

Few reasons it's cheaper when you are younger. To try to get you locked in when you are younger for more years of paying. Younger people probably don't make as much as older folk. Younger people more likely working fulltime still and will be using the club less, especially during the week. And maybe to also get a younger generation in.

Our junior membership rates end at 35, but it is a significant discount if you are under 35.

Please explain mommy tinder. Do you really swipe right/left at other moms? Cause I feel like that could be hilarious.

Yes!! You swipe up!!!! The app is called Peanut and I love it. I have a 4 month old (December baby) and we moved to Westchester so new baby, winter, new neighborhood = loneliness. Lol! I Met one girl that lives 3 min away and we are super close. Another woman I met at buybuybaby but we were a match in the app and then I realized it was the person I met at the store lol! Also went to some music class last week and some of the moms found me on the app as well. I highly recommend it!

Hahahaha, I was in the exact same situation as you 2.5 years ago except on LI, not westchester. I still have no friends on LI
I’ll need to keep it in mind when we move. DH is begging me to look at a house in Larchmont this weekend so I’ll need the Peanut for the Poors app because I’ll need to find the one other 7-11 coffee drinking mom wearing clearance rack target clothes. I hope the app is free or I may never find her.

Just don't wear jeans and you should be fine. A lot of clubs have no denim rules. Ours now allows neat white denim but that's just in the past few years.

That's great! I think most people have an idea of what yacht clubs and country clubs are like in their head that are very different from reality. A lot of times it's a great way for your family to make friends, it's an automatic playdate at the pool for your kids without any planning, their are camps and opportunities for your kids to take tennis, golf and swimming lessons that are convenient for your whole family, organized parties for holidays for both kids and adults....

Everyone was SO nice. Pretty much every person came over to my husband and I and introduced themselves and welcomed us to the neighborhood. We aren’t joining though. Lol
