Am I right to be upset?
I made a doctor's appointment 3 weeks ago for my first prenatal visit...my doctor's office said they now like to see patients between 7 and 10 weeks...the earliest they could get me in was today for an afternoon appointment but I was nervous because I am over 9 weeks and have some previous risk factors that we need to address. So I arrive today (they confirmed Tuesday) to the desk people telling me that the doctor called in sick and didn't I get her message...turns out she called a number that is one off from my number accidentally. The earliest she can get me in for a late afternoon appointment is sometime next week. I'm just so frustrated that I had to wait so long to then get cancelled on. I had a complete meltdown because I'm so nervous and wanted some confirmation that things were ok. I also love my doctor and hate to have to leave her. I immediately called another doctor and decided this was the sign to move on. The receptionist was horrified to hear that I haven't been seen yet as their standard is by 8 weeks, which is what I had always thought before this. I guess I'm feeling like my old office is pushing people off because they are down a few doctors and can't keep up with appointments. And I'm hormonal so I'm just upset that I still don't have any answers. I guess this was more of a vent than a question, but I am just so upset!

Since they messed up and you were there already, I would have expected to be seen by another doctor or nurse.

Re: Am I right to be upset?
Tough one.
Human errors happen. If they did try to call you and thought they did, it stinks but it was probably an honest mistake.
I think most places try to see you around 6-8 weeks to confirm it’s not an eptopic pregnancy or some other issue. The 7-10 seems strange to me but it’s also hard for some people to know exactly when they got pregnant.
This is a stressful time. You need to feel comfortable. I wouldn’t necessarily switch over this one thing but if something feels off to you then switch! There’s enough to stress about when pregnant, your doctor shouldn’t be one of them
I had a horrible experience with an OB. The way she treated me after a miscarriage left deep (emotional) scars. If you feel like it’s not adding up or it could be signs of overall lazy/unresponsive staff then get out of there.
Congrats!!! Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months.

Am I right to be upset?
Congratulations
If you have not had a problem with appointments in the past I might give them another chance. I would call tomorrow morning and speak to the office manager or doctor and see if they can see you sooner due to the cancellation but more due to your concerns that need to be addressed ASAP.
For my pregnancies I was always seen around 8w give or take a day or two.

I’d be annoyed, but wouldn’t leave a doc I loved over it. It’s obviously a very busy office and you’re giving them limited time to give you an appt (late afternoon), which is probably their busiest. Can you be more flexible to get in earlier?

I've had issues early before and I'd be very upset to not be seen until 10 weeks. I hate even having to wait until 8 weeks but I get it at least. I'd probably switch, too. But try not to stress. Congrats and happy and healthy 9 months!!

Re: Am I right to be upset?
I would definitely switch doctors. There are plenty of great doctors out there. 10 weeks is very late to be seen for the first time.

I'd switch doctors. When I was PG, I purposely chose practices with multiple doctors so the above would not happen. When a dr calls in sick, they usually would try to reschedule you with another doctor, especially for a prenatal appointment!

Re: Am I right to be upset?
first of all: CONGRATULATIONS!
i understand that honest mistakes can happen in the best of places. they also have to understand that their clientele is PREGNANT WOMEN... who worry and are emotional. it's the nature of the beast.
my one and only baby is 23, so it's been a while... i say, listen to your gut and your heart. if you feel this was a sign to move on to another dr, then do it.
when i was about 6 months along, i had a dr appt. at the time, i was living in washington heights (a very latino area and my last name was garcia).
i've always had issues with LOW blood pressure, so when the nurse took my blood pressure i asked for the numbers. she held the chart against her chest and refused to answer me. that was my first sign.
when the dr saw me, he was FREAKING OUT and calling columbia pres to get an ambulance to his office.
long story short... the nurse grabbed the wrong garcia file and that woman would have been WAY overdue. they were ready to slice and dice me to get a baby out of me who was not ready to come out.
i changed drs as soon as i walked home.
i know they are very different stories, but i share to say... trust your heart. even if it was the very first time they make a mistake with you, only you know why you worry and why you need to be seen asap.

My dr office at least when I was pregnant takes you as soon as you tell them you have a positive. Both times I was really early so they had me come back a 1-2 weeks later to make sure everything is looking OK. I would have probably been upset that I would have to wait that long.

I don't have the flexibility, unfortunately. I am a teacher and my sick time is my only maternity leave, so I can't afford to use it now. They have a very limited sono tech at the office I use also...I sort of knew making my initial appointment that they were understaffed and it might be an issue, but I've been with them for 8 years through a few significant health issues and they really did want to make things work so I didn't have to leave. I know though that it needs to happen...I can't have it being an issue every other week.

Thanks. I know I have to trust my gut, even though I trust my doctor more than any other I've ever seen. Her office isn't being run in a way that supports my needs.

Sad story is they are a practice with multiple doctor...seems they haven't replaced a few doctors that retired and no one wants to go to this office.
