If you sold a house

Did you leave any info for the new owner?

I was thinking of typing up a letter with info like landscaper, oil company and all services we used for the house.

It’s a single mom so dh wants to leave them a bottle of wine and a small toy for the 3 year old.

My sellers gave us all receipts for major items such as water heater, central air, and the heating contract info. They also left appliance manuals too. They left the garbage schedule and a bottle of wine/ card on the counter for when we walked in.

Re: If you sold a house

The previous owners left us all that info, plus takeout menus. Oh and a bunch of gardening tools which were a lifesaver having never owned a home before.

She also sent us a welcome to your new home card in the mail like a week later which brought tears to my eyes. It was just a nice touch showing she cared about who the house was being passed on to and the memories being continued there.

The previous owners left us with a hole in the oil tank....

When we sell in the next year or 2 I plan on leaving any info on warranties, work that's been done, etc.

Re: If you sold a house

I think that would be a very nice gesture and appreciated. I would also exchange cell numbers in case a question may come up in future.

Yes, we left info about the house, as well as a bottle of champagne, 2 glasses (from dollar store), and menus to the local take out places.

Yes I left things like extra crystals for the chandelier, extra tile, remotes for garage and ceiling fans - everything labeled. Also a list of who serviced the oil burner and whatever else I had at the time.

When we sell I plan on leaving all of the appliance manuals, the certificate for the oil tank we abandoned, the paperwork for the electrical upgrade we did and new roof we put on the house. I'll leave the new owners as much useful information as I can about the house.

I would not exchange phone numbers. I have heard horror stories about buyers with complaints to sellers about certain things that they find. Someone I know is actually being sued due to post-sale interactions over a cable wire issue. I doubt anything will come of it except legal bills and aggravation. If they have a real question have them contact your REA to contact you.

We left warranty information and manuals for anything we could find and information for our landscapers.

ITA!! Do NOT give your phone number!! You want a clean break from the house. My parents made the mistake of doing this back in the 80's after selling their first house and for the first few years the new owner would call and drive them crazy with questions about the house and a few times she got annoyed when they refused to fix something for her!! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CONTACT INFO FOR THEM!!......................you will regret that. When you sell your house you're done, everything from that point forward is the new owner's problem. Don't make it yours!

Yes, we left a list of all the service providers we used and a box with all of the owner's manuals and warranties for appliances and stuff.

I am closing on a house next week and the owners asked if I would like the names/numbers of the people they used (landscapers, pool people etc), which I very gratefully said yes to

Yes, left everything we could. In our new place they gave us EVERYTHING! They were original owners so had original everything from 1967! Plus they moved in across the street so we can always ask them. And they left champagne in fridge.

Re: If you sold a house

We left manuals for appliances, some yard tools, full containers of paint labeled for the rooms, shelving in the basement and some menus for our favorite restaurants.

I agree with others about not leaving contact info. The new owners are bad mouthing us to our old neighbors (we are still very close with) about things that we had nothing to do with/no control over. They turned out to be nasty people unfortunately.

Re: If you sold a house

Definitely do NOT exchange phone numbers. That's a headache waiting to happen. I've heard of annoying buyers who hound sellers with quesions, but also annoying sellers who can't tear themselves away from their old property and keep coming around. Very strange and awkward. Make a clean break.

Re: If you sold a house

when we bought our house it was an estate sale and the owners sisters were in charge. they were kind enough to leave some take out menus for places near by, manuals for appliances that were left, and contracts that were in place at the time for the oil company.

im sure that would be appreciated by the next owner.

NEVER leave your cell number! That is just looking for a whole bunch of trouble. They can contact your attorney if they need you.

I left a folder with the local takeout menus, the appliance manuals, and a contact phone list of local plumbers, electrician, etc.

We left manuals that we had for appliances

Business cards for whoever we used for upkeep (landscaper, plumber, etc.)

Warranties for anything new purchased (i.e. new chimney liner)

ETA: Also nice if you let them know what days garbage/recycling is.

We left appliances manuals but I will say we sold our house in 2014 and the buyer still emails me for recommendations for landscapers, plumbers, take out, etc. Completely ridiculous. I wish I had typed up a paper like you are talking about.

Re: If you sold a house

Yeah, the previous owner of our house left us with a leaking roof and overflowing cesspool.

We left our buyers a stack of appliance manuals, info about major work we had done (new AC/roof warranties etc).

I think it's very nice and helpful if you are willing to do that.
