fertility specialist under a year of ttc?

regular poster in hiding..

my husband and i are going on 9 months of ttc our first child. i recently saw a new gyno for my annual and of course brought up the fact that we're trying. i'm 29, have regular periods every month to the exact day and am generally healthy. i have used opk's a few times over the last few months and have found that i seem to ovulate between days 14-16. my husband is healthy for the most part as well.

the gyno told me that she recommends we see a fertility specialist already. i flat out asked her if that's a little premature since we haven't been trying for a full year yet and she said that it's not because we have used opk's and timed our intercourse to be during my fertile week. i was really surprised that it came to be fertility specialist talk so quickly... i was kind of taken back and not expecting it. not a fun day...i wound up crying a lot to my husband when i got home because i just didn't expect the conversation to take that turn.

i don't know if i'm in denial or if she just jumped the gun but i guess i'm just looking for opinions of others who might be in my shoes?

it's hard enough to stay positive when you've been ttc for almost a year... i guess in my head i just never expected it to take this long to get pregnant!

Re: fertility specialist under a year of ttc?

Based what I have heard and know, rule of thumb is generally a year unless there are other medical factors, but not everyone follows that rule. Is there any particular reason your OB felt you should go other than OPK’s and timed not working?
If you have coverage, it might be worth a consult. RE’s have a lot more insight. They run blood tests, do sonograms, send you for a test to make sure you don’t have blocked tubes. They do sperm analysis, genetic testing. They check a lot of factors. Prior to, DH and I had no health issues. I had normal consistent periods. In the end the testing was pretty much normal normal so I was categorized as unexplained. We ended up finally being successful after doing medicated IUI’s and now have DS.
It’s really up to you. If you want to keep trying a few more months; go for it. It won’t hurt. If you are feeling like you might want some answers or help. Go for the consult. He or she can explain everything, what’s involved for testing, etc. It’s worth a shot. Lots of luck to you Chat Icon

If it were me, I'd probably go for the consult if it was covered by my insurance. I'd keep trying, but it might be a head start in case it doesn't. And I'm sure you wouldn't get in immediately, so it might be a few month wait anyway.

I'm sorry you're having trouble- it took about 9 months of trying to get pregnant with my first, too. And I was the same- 29, down to the minute regular periods, ovulating consistently around 12-14 days.

Personally, I didn't feel the need to see an RE just yet, but it can't hurt. If your OB really thinks there might be an issue, what will waiting accomplish? Nothing but wasting time and causing stress. I'd start with getting DH checked first and foremost. It's the least invasive and, IMO, easier to miss. It's not like guys go get this checked regularly like we do.

Good luck! I hope in the end you don't need it! Chat Icon
