Flying with young kids

All of this flu and illness talk is making me second guess our February break trip. We are supposed to be flying to visit family but I’m so paranoid my kids are going to get sick. In light of all the illnesses would you cancel the flight?

I'm acting paranoid this year but I don't think I would be able to cancel. I would bring Lysol wipes and wipe everything down, close the vents and hope for the best! If you are really nervous and it's not a really long flight maybe wear masks?

I would not cancel. Unless Ebola was rampant in the US we would be going.

We just flew in January and I was so nervous. I wiped down the seats, armrests, seatbelts, trays and touch screens as soon as we got to our seats with lysol wipes. I constantly reminded my daughter not to touch her face and wiped her hands before eating.

Honestly, I wouldn't change anything about my day, my travel plans, etc out of fear of catching something. You're just as likely to catch an illness staying home around town as you are if you travel. I try to not even think about it and just go about my life. I wash my hands, try to take care of myself and the rest is out of my control. Go enjoy your trip! Chat Icon

This.

I caught the flu a few years ago from work... you can get sick anywhere.

We're going away for break and I haven't even thought of cancelling. DS had 13/22 kids + teacher and aide out last week with flu/illness. I actually cant wait to transport them FAR away from the germs in that school and to Mexico where we can be outside the whole time. I don't think an airplane is any worse than anywhere else we go.

I've already got them addicted to their hand sanitizers so the only other thing I'll probably do is bring Lysol wipes for the plane like I did when they were babies.

I wouldn't cancel. However, I would bring masks just in case we are seated near people coughing/sneezing a lot.

I wouldn’t cancel. Everyone I know that got the flu this year didn’t get it from flying.
I’ve flown 5 times since January and noticed a Decent amount of people wearing masks.

Thanks everyone, I didn’t want to cancel but just needed a little reassurance I guess! I’ll definitely bring Lysol wipes but I didn’t think about masks....I wonder if I’d scar my kids more making them wear masks! Chat Icon

We are supposed to go to Cali in 2 weeks, and I have been on the fence with cancelling. Only because it's me solo with my kids, and if I end up sick, alone, clear across the country, that would totally suck. Happened to me at WDW a couple of years ago and it was horrible. Confined to the room for 4 days, had to get the doctor to visit me ($300 later). And, I DO wipe everything down, and still got sick. I was so mad!!!

I don't think lysol is enough though. I would bring Clorox Hydrogen Peroxide wipes also (that kills noro aka the stomach virus). Get them on Amazon. I would also get 70% alcohol wipes in the cannister for your hands from Rite Aid. Or if you can't find those, the Purell cottony soft individually packaged alcohol wipes (Amazon has those also). I am contemplating buying masks, BUT, I read somewhere that those are only good for 2 hours max or something!

Would regular hand sanitzer work? They seem to all be 70% alcohol now. I know the travel sized ones are TSA friendly since they are under the liquid limit.

I much prefer the wipes because they wipe the gunk off also instead of spreading it around on your hands !
