Flu without fever?

I'm getting paranoid because of the many flu cases. DS and I have been sneezing, congested, coughing (like a minor cold); but today he woke up with a sore throat (I thought it was because it was dry). He went to school and I had to pick him up because he was complaining of stomach ache and he wanted to throw up. He never did, we came home, he wasn't feeling good, but then went back to normal and only sneezing and congested.

Now... time to go to bed, again sore throat. But so far, no fever, no chills, no body ache. It is so confusing! Any lights on this? Could it be a light cold and something that upset his stomach? But how to explain the sore throat?

Re: Flu without fever?

The flu is going around, but so is a lot of other stuff. I’d just rule out that it’s not the start of strep.Chat Icon Hope he feels better.

I've had the flu and it comes on very quickly. Like all of a sudden feeling like you've been got by a bus and not being able to get up. You would know for sure if you have it. I never got a fever though

My sister just had this and went to the urgent care. She thought she had strep maybe, but despite the fact that her throat was sore, it wasn't even red the doctor said. No strep. She had to insist she be tested for the flu, and that came back negative. So just a virus they said

Thanks! I'll wait until tomorrow. DS has something important tomorrow and I just hope he is well because he has put his heart on it, and I don't want him to have to miss it because he is sick.

I went to urgent care last week with a fever and tested negative for the flu. According the doctor there are over 200 types of viruses you can get (some with fever some with out). I hope you feel better!

Re: Flu without fever?

Last year I had tested positive for both Flu a & b with no fever, so you can have flu without fever or may not have it at all.

I would just listen to your body and don’t be shy about going to the doctors.

My cousin is sick with the flu and she said it’s terrible and I just found out someone I am close with had a elder family member die from complications of the flu and pneumonia.

My niece also was just sick with the same symptoms as yours and she is ok now with a just a lingering cough. I am wondering if there is relation between her illness and my cousin since we were all together over the weekend and they both got sick on Sunday/Monday. But it may just be coincidence.

You can have the flu with no fever, I have. I typically don't run fevers, neither do my mom or grandmother. Just the way some people are I guess!

I work in a school and there’s so many random viruses going around, many lasting upwards of a week.

In 2015 I was exposed to flu and randomly had a physical appt. told my doc I felt feverish and was exposed and he laughed and said is your fever over 100? And I said no, and he said I don’t have the flu. Next day same and I demanded a flu test and had flu A. Fever NEVER broke 100.

Re: Flu without fever?

Yes its possible - my son had flu - Flu B and had a high temperature and my friend had Flu - Flu A and no fever - much milder symptoms - headache..congestion but no fever at all.

Yeah, that's just it! Some people like me just don't run fevers! Normally my body temp is on the low side, so like 99 is a fever for me. Luckily after all these years my doctor realizes that. Even as a kid I didn't really run high fevers. The women in my family are like that.

Thanks for asking. He is doing better. He woke up fine on Saturday, only congested a little bit, and yesterday he was also feeling well. It is true about the various viruses going around. This morning I heard about many kids being absent, being sick for one reason or the other.

Glad to hear he’s doing better! This is the germiest season I can remember since 2009. I think that’s what the official reports are saying too. Makes you just wanna hibernate till Memorial Day.

Made me crazy when my mom saw a dr recently and he told her she “didn’t seem sick enough to have the flu”.. umm.. yeah you can still have the flu despite not fitting a physical description Chat Icon He checked her for it anyway but it wasn’t the rapid test, it was a series of other tests that took like 5 days to get back. Turns out she didn’t have anything but still, how can you judge based on appearance?

My mom felt awful and had the chills in the waiting room, though her temp was only in the high 99s.
