Vent: Daycare and nap
When does your Daycare start limiting/cutting nap time?
My DS is 3.5 years old and does not nap on days he is home. Daycare days, however, he takes a 1.5-3 hour nap. This is making bedtime a disaster. We say goodnight at 7:30 and it is currently 9:10 and he’s still up.
I asked today if they can eliminate his nap and they said they need to offer rest time and that if I want it reduced, I can get a letter from my doctor and say he needs to be woken up after 1.5 hours. WTH - 1.5 hours is still a really long time. Plus, I’m his mom. I’m saying no nap. It’s disrupting his nighttime sleep. I’m paying you people thousands of dollars a year - I think you should be following my wishes.

That's insane. My DD is 2 and sleeps for 1.5 hours MAX. The kids in her class get woken up after 2 hours.
I would speak with the director. Why on earth would you need a doctor's note for that??

I believe by law the kids do have to go on cots for a portion of the day- but not 3 hours!! I believe it is 1 hour. After 1 hour, they should be allowing your DS to sit on his cot and quietly read a book, color, or do puzzles.

The note is probably to cover themselves in case the state is there and your DS is up. When I taught daycare almost ten years ago I had a little girl with the same issue and she only napped 30 minutes. We had her at the table doing puzzles the rest of the two hours.

The daycare is required by law to have “ down time”. The center my ds went to would let them sit in their cots and read or play quietly. The issue I saw is that at that age that doesn’t last very long and they either fall asleep or become disruptive to the others. Most daycares do. It have the staff or space to take the kids in another room.

Our daycare cut back naptime as soon as I asked. They did rest time until Pre-K where they then had a nap and no nap room (since they had two Pre-K classes).
ETA - I started first limiting nap to an hour before getting rid of it completely. DS 1 was about 3.5 when I did it, DS 2 was 3.

3 hours?! That's a crazy long nap. DD usually maxes out at 2 and that's when she's exhausted. If she's taking a 3 hour nap, she's sick, and she's not even 2.

Yes, I think they are required to provide 30 minutes of rest time. My DS said the teacher tells them they need to sleep. I told him he should just sit there quietly.
On daycare days, he is sleeping at night 9pm-6am (a lot of times he is up around 5:45am, but he will usually stay in his room until 6). He naps at minimum from 12:30-2:30.
On nondaycare days, he is in bed at 7:30 and sleeps 8pm-6:30am, which seems more appropriate.

We have the same problem. On the weekend, DS doesn't take a nap, and he'll go to bed around 8:30pm and sleep until 7am. During the week, he takes a 1.5 hour nap at daycare, and then he won't go to bed until 9-9:30pm, and then he's up at 6-6:30am. It's like going to bed later somehow makes him get up earlier. Sometimes he tries to go to bed earlier, but he just has too much energy. By the end of the week, I feel like he's running on fumes because he isn't getting enough sleep. He used to do a 2 hour nap plus sleep 7pm-7am. I miss those days!

I called to get the letter so I am hoping this alleviates some of the problem.
My DH and I are usually in bed by 9 at the latest. Last night, he came out of his room at 9:10 and I had to yell at him to stay in bed since we were going to bed....

New York State Law
(i) Appropriate sleep, rest and quiet periods which are responsive to individual and group needs must be provided so that children can sit quietly, lie down to rest, or begin or continue their night's sleep. For children unable to nap, time and space must be provided for quiet play. Children must not be forced to rest for long periods of time. Sleeping arrangements for infants require that the infant be placed on his or her back to sleep, unless medical information is presented to the provider by the parent that shows that arrangement is inappropriate for that child.

DS is 5 (tomorrow!...yikes!) and he still naps at day care but hasn't napped at home in at least a year or more. Pre-k nap times are only 1 hour. The younger children have a 1.5 hour nap time. After that the lights go on. I think a 3-hour nap at day care is insane!
That being said, perhaps you need to consider a later bedtime. 7:30pm is early IMO, and he's showing you he isn't ready for bed that early. Try pushing it later by a half hour or so. I know early wake ups are rough (my kids are up at 6:20am every day, too!), but they would never go to bed that early regardless.
And then have them limit the nap to 1 or 1.5 hours. I can't even believe a day care would have a 3 hour nap time.

I just looked through the NYS OCFS website and could only find the above. I see nothing at all about a mandated rest period. Where is everyone finding that? I'm just curious, because when my DD was young, I always thought the nap time was WAY too long also.

I would get the note. That nap is ridiculously long. My place now lets my daughter (who is 3.5) do puzzles or color instead of napping bc it was ruining her night time routine. As long as she isnt cranky or bad at school I dont see what the issue would be.

I don't care about early wake ups - I am a morning person - I wake up at 4:15 am to go running with my neighbor so as long as he sleeps until 5:30 (when I get home), it is a non issue (my DH is not a morning person - LOL). Plus, my DS needs to be up no later than 6:25 so we can be out the door on time.
On weekends with no nap, he quietly reads a book in bed for 15-30 minutes and passes out by 8, which leads me to believe that the excessive nap at daycare is causing the weekday issue. On daycare days, he will usually stay in bed for the most part, but pops his head out every 15-20 minutes with a request.... The requests usually end when I yell at him around 9.
I do not think 9:15-5:45 is enough night sleep for a 3.5 year old. PLUS, he has recently been waking up at least once in the middle of the night so it's not even continuous sleep! All my friends have 3 year olds and they are all asleep by 7:30/8pm.

I agree. I was suggesting 8pm-6am with a capped nap time.

Honestly there is not solid rule on when they should be asleep. My ds has always gone to bed 9 or later and is up at 6am.
