Re: Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in

I go to church every week and I never drink the wine. Growing up, they offered it and I think I drank it?

When my oldest DD was making her first Communion, my DH was so grossed out that she would be drinking the wine, but as luck would have it, she was the shortest kid in the class and therefore, first on the line...so, first to drink Chat Icon

Funny story, Communion wine related... During her first Communion practice, they gave all the kids a sip of unconsecrated wine so that they wouldn't be disgusted by the taste on the big day. As she and I processed to the back of the church afterward, she gathered with her little friends and loudly exclaimed, "My breath smells just like my mom's now!" Chat Icon Chat Icon

Growing up I never saw it - I don't go to Catholic masses now, but there's no way I would have it.

My parish growing up always offered wine.
I saw something online recently about a diocese in Ireland suspending wine and hand shaking to offer peace during the current flu season.

My parish has suspended the wine during flu season, But they haven't done it this year yet. Yes, I agree that it's un sanitary , but I figure it's just a sip for a quick second, so it's not too bad. But I don't take it either.

I plan on taking my daughter for her 40-day blessing and I’m not sure if they will give her wine. If they do, I won’t be taking her. Im sure I can tell the priest no but the whole thing grossed me out even though it’s delicious. I love how they make the kids go first to receive communion to avoid germs Chat Icon

Yeah totally unsanitary and I'm surprised anybody actually drinks it from that cup knowing everyone else does too. They should pour it into small cups to distribute.
I also think the hand shaking is a bad idea too... another way to spread germs. And when someone sticks out their hand you feel forced into it.

I am currently in a no-mass phase, but I am Catholic and have never taken the wine. The germ factor totally freaks me out.

i always drink form the cup and have for the past 20 years.
I was also a Eucharistic Minister and would have to drink any leftover Blood after it was distributed.
I have never gotten sick from it.

As far as I know there have been no studies about this, but there also haven't been any epidemics.

You're not required but are encouraged to partake fully in the Body AND Blood of Christ. It is a personal choice.

I totally get that you are supposed to partake in both, but there has to be a better way. Like others have mentioned DH says they should have the tiny individual cups. I see by the other posts here that some churches do that and I think that is great. If they offered that I would absolutely partake.
While I am sure there hasn't been any epidemics, I am quite sure flu and colds and viruses have passed from one person to the next.
I wouldn't drink from an unwashed glass in a restaurant, or chug from a stranger's water bottle on the train, same thing here. It's really just common sanitation.
Back when the church originated, sanitation and cleanliness was not what is today. Times have changed and I just think the church should change with them. At least for the little things like this. More people would be able to participate in receiving both the body and the blood then.

I'm not sure which church gives out individual cups, but I don't think that's possible for a catholic church. what's inside the cup is not just wine, but the blood of Christ. After the cup is taken away, it is washed in a special sink that goes directly into the ground and not into the sewers. If you gave out individual cups, you would need to collect each and every one, wash them at that sink and then dispose of them properly. Even a drop is sacred. how would they control that?

No idea. I was just going by what others on this thread said about their churches doing it. Maybe they can elaborate.
For now I cannot partake as I can't afford to get sick.

Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in

My aunt's parish in NJ has disposable shot glasses of wine instead. I am totally grossed out about sharing the cup!
I remember we didn't have wine for a long time, now it's back.

Maybe the other churches aren’t Catholic? In the Catholic Church they would have to make sure every individual cup was wiped clean with a cloth.

That's why I just asked a poster who mentioned the cups if it was a Catholic Church. Curious about that

We have volunteers for sections at our catholic church, they pass around a gold plate that holds the shooters, and after that, the gold plate is passed back around for you to place your shooter back into the gold plate. There is a hole for each shooter, and as a volunteer, I haven’t had a problem with anyone not returning it.

I grew up Lutheran, and when we had Communion, they had trays of individual glasses. Like half a shot glass or something. That way, everyone had their own individual glass.

Same here in a Christian church. Everyone got a single use plastic small shot glass.

This is what they do in our church as well (non-denominational).

I attend a Roman Catholic Church in Queens (part of the Brooklyn diocese). The priest said that the bishop sent over a notice that All Catholic Churches in our diocese are to suspend wine starting today due to the flu season. I never take the wine but thought of this thread when I heard that.

Interesting! And smart.
I guess there is something to me being skeeved by it! Chat Icon

Wish my church would do that. But my church loves to spread germs it seems. They make you shake hands before mass starts, during the sign of peace, and the other day some woman in front of me grabbed the stranger next to her's hand for the Our Father.
I'm like ENOUGH touching! Keep your hands to yourself please. It's not necessary.
