Really need help deciding...
I’ve posted about this before but I’ve reached a point where I really need to make a decision. I’ve been at my current job for about 6 years. I have moved up here and there, I’m good at what I do, I’ve felt in a lull for a while, especially when returning from maternity leave. I got a promotion shortly after I returned. My job isn’t what I thought in terms of my promotion. My boss also utilized me to do what she doesn’t have time for... I barely do what I am supposed to be. I work an hour away from home, my schedule is very flexible which is a perk but the demands of being “on call” when that’s not in my job description are getting to me... like my boss texting me at 9pm. I’ve wanted to do consulting work for a while but never felt stable or secure enough to do so. I finally have many cases lined up and have the hours I need. My consulting work so far is going well but I need to make a choice of quitting my full time job or giving up my cases because I cannot do both. I have a great rapport with my boss where I consult and have even been as far as requested by school district I consult in to take a few additional cases. I like my full time job I’ve been here a while and I know everyone but I just don’t feel satisfied with work anymore and feel the demands are greater than my role and greater than I want. I don’t want to be bothered at home about nonsense when I’m with my kids. So these are the pros/ cons: Full time pros: good salary Very very flexible schedule Flexible boss like 90% of the time Generous paid time off
Cons: Increased demands beyond my role Long hours Long commute Feeling unfulfilled
Consulting: Pros: Good hourly rate I’ll have to work less (20-24 hours a week) cases close to my house Change of pace
Cons: No benefits/ time off And the biggest thing that holds me back- sometimes work may be inconsistent or a case ends.... I depend on a certain amount monthly...
Update: 12/15 is my last day at my full time job. feel relieved in a sense. A final push was my son will be back in PT 3xweekly and I need to be there for him

Really need help deciding...
I would stick with my current job because of the benefits and time off. For me personally, I am not sure if I would be comfortable knowing work could be inconsistent if I just did consulting

Same Good health insurance is sooooo expensive and sometimes even hard to find on your own. Your benefits are worth a lot

Can you look for another job in general but not consulting? To me, not having the guarantee of a paycheck and the stress of having to self promote to get jobs would be way more annoying they ur current job cons.

I'd stay just because of the health insurance...it's so expensive on your own and not easy to find, plus every year you have to find a new provider. Unless you have a spouse who's insurance you could be on, I wouldn't risk it.

My husband works for LIRR so we have government employee health insurance. I wouldn’t need to sell my service. The consulting service would be through an agency that works with kids with autism

Re: Really need help deciding...
Why wont have time off? Do you mean its not paid time?
If you can guarantee a base amount of $ that you definitely require and work with that budget - hands down consulting would be my choice

Yes so I would be off when school is closed but no PAID time off like if I have to take a sick day I just won’t get paid for my scheduled cases that day

If your husband has a stable income that you can live comfortably off of, and good health insurance I would go with consulting. It's a risk, but much better to give it a try rather than staying in a job you don't really like. If you are well regarded already, you could always go back, maybe not to the same exact job, but something similar.

This. I used to be all about stability until I took a job I hate. Now I'm all for doing what makes you happy and if you'll be happier consulting, go for it.

If you can get your health insurance through your DH, then I say go for it. You have one life. I don't believe $ should come before happiness. A happier work life makes you a happier person in general (wife, mother, friend, etc)
I believe in taking chances. If your DH is behind you, go for it. There's always another job somewhere.

Re: Really need help deciding...
I have a job in private practice so I only make money if I work. Much like work can be very very good sometimes, other times (eg. around holidays) can be very light and so I just don't make as much. I've always said that if we depended on the income I make in any way, there would be no way that I could have this type of job. The worry about generating the income would be too stressful for me.
Just something to think about. What are you going to do in the summer? Will you still have work or will you have to save during the year to cover your expenses during summer months?

If you can live off your husbands salary, then I would go for the consulting.
If you rely on your income for monthly bills, I would keep your job. The stress of being self-employed is the worst when you need that money. At first the freedom is great, but the stress can be overwhelming and just isn't worth it.
Maybe you can talk to your boss about contacting you after business hours?

Well that changes my answer then! I know what insurance he has. Go for it!

I always held the benefits until my husband became an LIRR employee back in the spring so it was never feasible for me. I feel like I have well established cases and can finally make the jump. I’ve built in a contingency of an extra $500 a month doing 2 evals a month/ parent trainings to use as a safety net if there’s a school closure or cancellation. I also left a morning open for make ups if needed.

I agree with this—my husband is self employed and when I was working it was never an issue but since I have been home with my daughter full time there are times it is VERY STRESSFUL—he makes a very good income when everything runs smoothly but the times when things go wrong have been rough. Having two young children and no paid time off leaves you completely without pay when your boys are sick. Unless you can het by on one income or have help when your children are sick I would say stay at your current job or start looking for another position with set hours and income closer to home.
