Having food delivered to someone who is sick
I want to send dinner to my sister in law and her boys because she had surgery and is bedridden. Is it weird to have it delivered and not tell them ahead of time? If I mention it, she will for sure tell me not to do it.

It's a nice gesture. But I would definitely ask first. To make sure they don't have anything else planned.
I'd tell her either let me know or I'm sending something you may not like. Either way I'm doing it. So let me do this for you!
Or something along those lines

I think its super nice, I would also mention to her you would like to help by sending a nice meal for the family so she can rest.
I did this in July for a co-worker who's baby girl needed open heart surgery. I let her know thinking it would help her husband who was going to be home with her other daughter. Instead, she ended up asking if I can bring it over the weekend, when she is home. She remained in the hospital with her daughter

Absolutely
i like this idea.
if her kids are old enough... maybe call them and find out which local places are the family's favorites.
i would have been over the moon if someone did something like this for me the times i've had surgery.
this is an awesome gift you're giving them (read: her)

I think it would be better, and probably easier for you so you don't have to try to coordinate a meal for them. You're a very thoughtful SIL.

I really like the idea of a meal sent, because there is something comforting about the act of doing and receiving. Can you do both. One meal sent or brought and a card for another night?

I love the gift cards idea. I got one when DS was a baby and almost 12 years later still remember the gesture. Would something like seamless work, so they can choose any restaurant or type of food?

Thank you everyone. They are actually out of state, so if I had food delivered it wouldn't have been by me personally anyway. So the gift cards is easier for me. I know a few restaurant's that they really love, so I can just get gift cards from them (they are chains, and they deliver).
