Kindergarten question regarding cut off and moving

Asking for a friend.

Let's say your child is going into kindergarten in a district where the cut off is 12/30 but you are moving. you are moving to a district where the cutoff is 12/1. Your child's birthday is December 10th. Your child will be in kindergarten already in the first district. What would the second district with earlier cut off say if you moved mid year?

I think it could vary by district. I would reach out to the district you would be moving to.

You'd probably have to check with the district. It could go either way.

I'd assume they wouldn't allow a transfer from a private school, but it might be different for public.

I don't know what they would say but I know I would not be ok with being told I had to pull my child out of a grade they were already in and force them to restart the following year.

I have a December baby and we live in a district with a 12/1 cutoff. We're moving to a 12/31 district (or back to the city) before kindergarten. It's non-negotiable for me that she start when she is supposed to, which, IMO, is with every other child born in 2015.

Thanks for the replies. The crazy thing is that the two districts are right next to each other and her child's birthday is basically 8 days after the 12/1 cutoff.

Kindergarten question regarding cut off and moving

I am right next to half hollow hills and their cut off is 12/31 but my district is 12/1. It's more about the money the school gets in funding. They might not be able to get it for your child.

My district will accept the child in 1st grade if he/she has completed the kindergarten in private school or another district. If you are moving mid-year I am not sure, though. I
would think that they would give you a hard time about busing and books as he/she is not eligible.

I **think** a friend of mine had this issue and she was able to have her child complete the year in the district he started and then start in the new district after he/she moved. I would look into that first (assuming they are within driving distance).

Kindergarten question regarding cut off and moving

I'm in a district with 12/1 and know of 2 families that were able to move ahead due to kindergarten being completed in another school.
I think the principal met with the parents/child individually and assessed their readiness for first grade.

Thank you for the replies. I think she has to go directly to the second school. This isn't quite cut and dry.

Re: Kindergarten question regarding cut off and moving

It's pretty common to have this situation, because many LI districts have the 12/1 cutoff whereas it seems like the city, Westchester, etc. have 12/31 or 1/1.

If a child moves after starting K, it seems like the child stays in the grade they are starting in, unless there are unique circumstances. If the move is prior to starting K, then obviously the child would do an extra year of pre-K and wait to start K according to the district cut-off.

But as an example - my DS is going into third grade. He's an early December 2008 bday and there's a girl who was in his class last year who was a late December birthday 2009 birthday, so she was more than a whole year younger than him. She moved from Queens. We are in N. Bellmore schools.
