Vet Rec + How much?

After 28 years, I'm finally adopting a dog! I'm so excited! This dog has no vaccinations and needs to be spayed. She's a 2-year shih tzu/chihuahua. So I'm taking everything into consideration and want to be super prepared..

What am I looking at in terms of cost for spaying? Vaccinations?

Also, any vet recs? I'm in Western Suffolk.

Grady animal hospital in Sayville. They are so wonderful and so affordable. I take my 2 puppies to them. Spaying depends on the weight of the animal. They spayed my moms German Shepherd who weighed 80lbs and was just under $300

Vaccines are cheap I think rabbies was $28, Lepo was I think $25. Office visit is 50 I believe for the first time.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Bridget Brook at My Pet's Vet on Jericho Tpk in Huntington. I have used her for 3 dogs and she is amazing. She will not charge you for things you do not need and will discuss what you really need and what you don't need so you can make an informed decision. I'm not sure of prices for vaccinations and spaying - I don't remember, but I am pretty sure her prices are very reasonable.

Congratulations! That's so exciting! Good luck!

Where are you adopting this dog from? I ask because any adoption or rescue center would have the dog vaccinated and mostly likely sprayed prior to adopting the dog out.

But back to your question, Petco does affordable vaccinations. Not sure about the cost of spraying though.

I use Dr. Parendo at St. Francis Hospital for Animals in Oakdale. He took over the practice from our old vets, who we loved. He is great with the animals and he calls us to follow up on how the pet is doing if there is an issue. The staff there is terrific and caring as well.

I haven't had any pets spayed there recently, so I don't know the costs. If you call them, they will give you a price. 631-567-1359.

Not sure if Sayville is too far for you but Sayville Hospital for Animals is great and I never felt ripped off there.
I love the vets there

I just adopted a rescue puppy and they sent him home with his first shots and then they work with Grady in Sayville so if I have him neutered there its no charge. North Shore was the same way. So it the dog is from a rescue ask.

Our regular vet is Massapequa Hospital for Animals. Not sure of cost as I haven't kept track with our first dog but I never felt it was outrageous.

Re: Vet Rec + How much?

Thanks for the advice everyone! She is a rescue but not from a shelter.. from a family who's older dog had puppies two years ago. They kept her but can not care for her so although she is safe and has shelter, she isn't loved and truly cared for. I'll look into all these recs! :)

I agree with this. And my best friend got burned by a 'rescue'. She adopted a 4 year old male dog who wasn't neutered and was behind on his shots

Turned out he also has heartworm disease.

It's a hot mess, he is a sweetie thoughChat Icon

I believe that the Town of Islip has a pet vac clinic coming up in the next few weeks. May be something to look into.
