School District
Has anyone ever fought to have their child put into a different school district?
The block behind me is a much better school district than mine and I would love for my kids to go there even if it meant me driving them. My brother is a teacher and is convinced I can get them into the better district but I'm not trying to get my hopes up. I'm just curious if anyone has ever tried to what the outcome was. TIA

i think those lines are drawn and not really "broken" for situational reasons. Property values in "better" school districts tend to be higher for that reason alone, and i think that if people knew they could argue their way into a better district but not have to pay more for their house/pay the school taxes for that district, everyone would do that.
Wanted to add: I was part of the Sewanhaka District growing up, and I knew that if you wanted to avoid Sewanhaka HS, you can go to NHP Memorial if you apply to get into their business program. That was the only way you could get away with going to a better school in the district. Otherwise, you were stuck going to NHP. Even though Floral Park Memorial is in the same district, if you were not a Floral Park resident there was no way you were allowed to go there. Just wouldn't be fair

I definitely wouldn't get your hopes up. Not happening unless you have a child with special needs and they don't have an appropriate program for the child and even then it wouldn't include siblings.

If you pay tutition to the district, you can. It's going to cost you thousands of dollars though.

I doubt it.
If they allowed that then everyone would be doing it. Why pay more taxes for a better district if you can just argue your way in?

You have to pay for everything to get a child to go out of district. And there has to be a reason. And I just don't like the one I'm in won't cut it.
You would have to pay for books, supplies everything. So its not even just a bus issue. That other district is not getting funding for your child so they need to get that money from you.

I looked into it this year (we have a significant issue within our district) and it was significantly more for me to send my child to the neighboring district as a tuition based student than it was to send her to private school. And I cannot get busing in the neighboring district.

It's $15k-$20k to have your child go to a district you aren't zoned for. I know because I called the districts we are house hunting in.

There is a school district in our area with major issues and I had a friend who was trying to send her son to another district.
Private paying was so expensive - it's basically equal to how much the district has to spend on it's most expensive student (any special services, etc) since they don't know if the incoming child from out of district needs any of these services.
We have some strange school district lines near us and people have wanted to switch districts (since they don't make sense) and it's not possible.

I can't get my kid who misses the K cutoff by 10 days into a district I pay taxes to. I'm guessing "I don't like the school" isn't going to get you far.
Couldn't you just move to the district you want?

Unless your property last the division line going through your property you do not have the choice of which school district to go to on a tuition free basis. Regardless of how close the line is there is no argument unless it crosses a part of the property. Otherwise the only way to go to the other district is by paying tuition which is normally $15,000 to $20,0000

There's cases where even this isn't enough. My cousin's bedroom was on the divide between two school districts, one of them being one of the best in Suffolk County. They were zoned for the other one, no exceptions.

That is not correct. There is a provision in the law that provides that if the property line divides a dwelling the family has the choice and provide notice to the district they are attending. (I represent school districts on Long Island so I know this for a fact )

I'm pretty sure your brother is wrong. Does he live on LI? You might be able to attend... if you pay tuition. Without having an address within the SD's borders, you're out of luck.
