Well contractions are a great sign but labor (usually) progresses so slowly the 1st time so you have time to shower etc. A sign that it's coming some time are increased BH contrax, the obvious water breaking, loosing the plug. Don't worry, you will know when it's time

That's not true
I did not expect labor as I was only 33 weeks...I was just not feeling myself that day...and I had a pain in my side/back that I did not have during my whole pregnancy.

Re: someone prepare me...
What I want to know is WHERE you feel contractions...
Is it in your belly or like down by your pelvis?

Re: someone prepare me...
i was afraid of the same thing....my best advice is this:
you will feel pain, a severe/sharp pain. it will end. now, if the same pain returns, pay attention to the time of the pains. if a 3rd comes, take note of the time. they will last about 30 seconds or so from what i recall.
I remember clearly I felt the baby's head move down/turn then BOOM, this AWFUL pain came over me at 10:58, at 11:03 another one, then at 11:08...over the next couple of hours, I went from 5 minutes apart to 1 minute. By the time I got cleaned up [luckilly I got the "icky" stuff out of the way in private at home], I had lost my mucus plug [actually, rather quickly] and the contractions were 30 seconds apart...on the way to the hospital, I thought the baby might come...5 minutes after arriving, I heard this gushing sound, then my pants were soaked. 45 minutes after arriving, my daughter was born. Granted, my labor was SHORT and quick....but at first, even I didn't realize I was in labor...I just had made it a point all through my pregnancy that any time I had a pain, I noted the time, duration and frequency if there were any additional ones. Once I realized there was a severe pattern developing and my mucus plug "delivered," I realized that I had in fact, not realized I was in labor....but quickly mobilized to get to the hospital.
Also, in hindsight, earlier that day, I had some issues with going to the bathroom...but I had recently overcome stomach flu, so I thought nothing of it...but I mean I had to RUN to the bathroom.

this can vary from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy.
mine were basically my "bump", the whole bump...it felt almost as if somehow someone was squeezing it. Some have back labor. I did not, so I can't begin to describe that.

I did--it's like someone ripping out your spine with their bare hands! Don't let that scare any of you...it is doable and believe it or not, everyone is right...you really do forget the pain!!
Anyhow, I did know "something" was going on around 10pm the night I went into labor--rhythmic cramps etc., but by 12pm it was unmistakable--progressive pain, 5 minutes apart. I did not have the presence of mind to shower and don't think I could have done it if I tried.
ETA...I never lost the plug and my water never broke.

Yes but you did know at some point, no? She's asking if the baby will just drop out.
It's NOT common at all. Let's just leave it at if you're having cramps & feel like you have to go to the bathroom at the same time, supress the urge to push until you've talked to your doctor.
