Opinions on sleeping arrangements for twins...

So my twins will be 6 months next week and I can't believe it Chat Icon. I have a twin pack and play (has 2 bassinets) my one twin hated it and continues to sleep in his lounger the other in one of the bassinets. They are getting too big to keep going like this. Our bedroom cannot fit 2 cribs, at all. The twin pack and play converts to the play pen. Would it be ok if they both slept in there together? Or is my only option to move them to their room and in their own cribs. Which I'm by no means ok with. I'll end up moving into their room. Like a psycho I get up multiple times a night to check if they are breathing... and they are snoozing all night long you think I would just sleep. They sleep right next to me so I can reach over and check on each one without getting out of bed. Thoughts?! Ideally I want them to be 6 months forever and sleep in my room but that's clearly not going to happen

Re: Opinions on sleeping arrangements for twins...

They probably could both sleep in the pack and play for a while, but maybe it's time to move them to their own cribs...it's sort of like pulling off a bandaid...I had a hard time moving my girls (I had a cosleeper), but once I did, we all slept better. I know how hard it is...I needed my husband to "help" me make the move each time, but I'm glad I did it, because my girls sleep well in their beds (we're past cribs) and that was super important to me.

I would put them in their own cribs in their own room. You'll get used to not having them right next to you. They would probably love having the room to stretch out and move around.

Agreed! Minimize having to do more transitions in the future and just moved them to their room in their own cribs. It will be an adjustment for sure but you will get used to it and you'll probably sleep much better.

I had a much harder time emotionally with my second who was a preemie so I totally get wanting to keep them close to you. In the end though, I wished I'd moved her sooner bc she had a harder time adjusting to the crib than my fist who I moved much younger.

Another vote for cribs.

I found out that it's easier to do certain things earlier on - transition will be more difficult the longer you wait and they probably need their own space now.

I vote put them in their cribs.

While the pack and play is good for naps I dont know how comfortable its for them sleeping in one all night long plus it just another transition you will have to do.

Get a video monitor for the room. They also have those monitors that go off if god forbid your child stops breathing, maybe invest in those if it will make you more comfortable.

Re: Opinions on sleeping arrangements for twins...

I have a 6 month old too and if you still want to keep them in your room, I know that you can buy a padded mattress for the pack and play. My co-worker uses it for his son and he said that he sleeps fine in it. I'm like you, I look several times a night to make sure he's breathing...nervous habit lol. If you want to keep them in your room longer, I say go for it. We lived in a 1 br apt. with DS 1 and we moved to a 2 BR apt just last year when he was 4. He transitioned fine, took like 4 days and he's been sleeping in his room since. Now with DS 2, we still have him on our room. The only other option is to put him with DS 1, but he still wakes up at night and I don't want to mess with DS 1's sleep. Plus, I like having in the room with me. They're little for only so long!

Agreed! Give them their own space. You can get dual monitors that will go back and forth between each room every few seconds so you'll hear all the noises. You may not believe it, but you WILL sleep better and your children likely will, too.

Agreed. DD moved to her own crib at about 5 months and it was glorious! Everyone slept better!

these are actually not really recommended. There are people fighting to get them off the market and made illegal to use. Of course you can take that with anything your told is not recommend and people do. i.e. people let their kids sleep on their stomach, sleep with blankets under one etc. Just wanted to give the information out.

I would move them into the cribs. You will have to do it sooner than later and I will guaranty it will never be an easy move for you....even if you do it at a year you will still wake up.

You will get used to it and that's what monitors are for.

I was just about to say the same. We waited til the girls were 6 months and they were sitting up and basically trying to roll over in their Rock and Play. I regret waiting that long to transition to the crib because it was a nightmare. Actually...still is. They are 2 and its a struggle every night.

oops, i didn't know they werent recommended, i never looked into it myself. sorry! if you want to keep them in your room for a little longer, do you have room for one crib in your room that you can keep them both in? (or is that not ok? i don't know about twins lol)

Pack n play mattresses are not recommended? Why? I have one for my ds and it's a sturdy foam inner, so not a suffocation risk, and it fits snugly along all the edges and corners. My ds has been sleeping on his since he was 5 months (he's almost 15 months now) with no issues. Is it a certain brand that's dangerous? I know it's not safe if you buy the wrong kind for your particular pack n play bc if it's not the exact right fit there can be gaps along the edges.

Either way, I would not recommend putting both babies in the same pack n play bc they would likely be rolling around in their sleep at that age.

We love ours and I've always recommended them but I was surprised to see an article about them recently. Apparently they are a suffocation hazard bc babies can get caught in the gaps. I know it said bc the sides of the pnp are stretchy that was part of it and I would assume bc the mattresses are so lightweight the can bow to make a little gap even if it fits well. Honestly, I only skimmed the article bc my youngest is 2.5 so I wouldn't have an issue using it still but I can see not using it for an infant.

Thank you everyone. I would love to put them both in the same pack and play with the mattress it came with. We have to do something. They can't sleep as th have been, I feel like they are getting bigger by the day. I'm just so not ready to part ways yet. Have a twin video monitor it's just a matter of setting one up per crib. I really don't feel ready but I don't think I have much choice

Move to cribs. My boys shared 1 crib in the beginning but when they started moving around they got separated into 2 cribs. I'd say around 3 months.

It's dangerous to have them in the same crib together at this age.
I had mine in the crib from day 1. Never used anything but the crib. Worked out great. They will probably be much more comfortable too
I know some people don't like them but the only thing that kept me sane was a movement monitor. Worked great and let me sleep at night

Definitely put them in their own crib. DD has been in her crib since 1 month. She moves around a lot in her sleep. I would be afraid of the two waking each other up from moving around in one pack and play. I also think the longer you keep them in your room the harder it'll be for you to do it later on.

Same. They actually slept better in their individual cribs.
