What important papers/documents do you keep?
I'm trying to figure out which papers/documents to keep and for how long. Credit card statements, bank statements, utility bills, etc. Thanks!

Re: What important papers/documents do you keep?
I keep old tax papers for 7 years, warranty information, pay stubs for 2 years, and things like birth certificates etc. I keep bills paid for 2 years, unless it's an auto pull.
I don't keep my bank statements or credit card statements or things like that bc I have them online for me.

i don't keep anything. They are all electronic now. Mortgage statements are on the bank's site, LIPA/Nat grid is online, etc.
The only thing i keep is the school tax bill/receipt we get every 6 months or so

Re: What important papers/documents do you keep?
I don't keep ANY monthly bill or utility statements. It's all accessible online so I'd rather not deal with the paper. The only important documents I keep are insurance policy paperwork, birth certificates, SS cards, marriage license, baptismal certificates, and anything relating to our house such as the roof warranty, the new oil burner paperwork, oil tank disposal certificate, etc.
ETA - We keep our income taxes too!

Taxes, house docs, car docs and ID Docs (Birth Certificates, SS Cards, Passports) Baptism Certs and, Marriage license, life insurance papers, copy of will and receipts/warranties/contracts for any major house repairs/purchases/work. Those are the only things saved in our fireproof safe.

I don't keep actual copies of things - instead anything important gets scanned and saved to a back-up drive.
I have a file that has birth and marriage certificates; SS cards, baptism certificate, etc. But tax returns and all related workpapers for returns get scanned to a PDF.
Tax bills I keep the latest one for proof of residency but once the next one comes, I scan the previous one as well.
Paperless is the way of the future!

Re: What important papers/documents do you keep?
To keep forever : social security card, birth certificate, marriage license, purchase and sale of home documents, ie. Deed and title insurance policy
To keep until expiration plus 5 years after expiration : passport, drivers license
To keep 7 years: taxes and supporting documentation including medical receipts
To keep until sold plus tax term: stock purchase and sale documents, stock certificate should be made for on line holding
Non tax or business receipts until end of month to reconcile with credit card.
