Mine had it done when he was 8. He had to spend the night in the hospital since he has a bleeding disorder. He woke up from surgery fine. It wasn't until the night after that it was bad. You have to stay on top of the pain meds, and then it's fine. I would say the first few days were bad at wake up since the pain meds wear off. I think it was about a week before he was himself again. It wasn't AS BAD as I thought it would be.

My dd had it done right before her 3rd birthday. She was fine. They had her eating and drinking before we could leave the hospital. We made sure to keep her home for 2 weeks and stayed on top of Motrin. Every 4hrs. Days 7-9 were the worst because that's when the scabs fall off. No straws, anything red or anything crunchy like chips. They sound like Minnie Mouse for awhile because of air flow. Would would spike her yogurt drinks or apple sauce with the Motrin since she would ask for it like clock work. It was the best thing we did for her.

I agree with the pp. DS had his out when he was 2.5 and recovery was difficult. He would wake up in the middle of the night screaming so we were all pretty frazzled. I think in his case it was the pain but it was also recovery from anesthesia. Definitely stay on top of the pain meds. And there are a lot of things that are soft that they can eat that isn't just ice cream for a week (apple sauce, yogurt smoothies, etc).

My dd was 2.5, recovery was rough, was home for 2 weeks with her and one of the biggest issues was making sure she stayed hydrated bc she didn't want to drink anything
