Locatelli Pecorino Romano kitchen disaster!

For some reason my DH felt the need to SHAKE a completely full 16 oz. container of cheese before opening it to put some on his food. Well.... it seems it wasn't closed tightly. I heard a scream in the kitchen and when I got in there ....... CHEESE EVERYWHERE ! I mean, I can't even describe it. But just imagine using toothpicks to get it out of the crevices of the stove.
Floor, counters, stove, toaster oven... everything. Covered. In $18 worth of grated cheese.

After 1 hour, i had it all cleaned. Scrubbed everything. Washed floor by hand. 3x.

It's been 2 hours and my house STINKS like a cross between a Pork Store and the rag they use at friendly's to "clean" the tables.

I might vomit.

WHAT DO I DO??!! I used 409, dawn (for extra grease), mr clean febreeze floor cleaner, and natures miracle odor remover. NOTHING. nothing is working. I pride myself on a clean and fresh smelling home. Even with dogs - it's always fresh. Now, not so much.

HELP!!!!! Will it just eventually not smell?

I've done that. More than once. For some reason the lids don't always fit shut. I swept it up and then used the wet swiffer. The smell will go away.

I now buy the block and grate it fresh. I don't like to work that hard for my food but its easier than sweeping, dropping it on the table, etc.

Squeeze some lemon? If lemon can get fish smell off hands, it can work for cheese. Obviously wash again with reg cleanser after you squirt lemon on your floors and counters

I'm really sorry… But I can't tell you how hard I laughed reading your description !

I would try some peppermint essential oil… I feel like that gets rid of all bad orders… It absorbs it somehow… It doesn't mask it.

Also… Can you keep the windows open if you have them nearby?

Omg my son loves to get into the grated cheese in the fridge... similar thing happened when he decided to "drink" from the 1lb container Chat Icon
Vinegar and lemon juice worked great on the floor, and I threw out the broom because it stunk! Didn't use the vacuum because I was so afraid of the canister smelling up, so I did it by hand Chat Icon
Maybe Mr Clean with febreeze? Worked for me, too

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has done this! I ended up getting a new handvaccum because I could get the smell out and every time I used it it would smell like cheese. Ugh!

This is what I was thinking, too. Maybe some kind of fresh lemon solution, and then some kind of lemon scented cleaner. And then maybe just leave half a lemon in a bowl on the counter. Lemon it up!

Re: Locatelli Pecorino Romano kitchen disaster!

DH was gonna get the new hand vac and I told him not to. Which caused a 15 minute argument as to why it was a bad idea. Went through 2 rolls of paper towel just getting the actual cheese up.

Thanks. It still smells today but not AS bad. I'm gonna start w some vinegar because I won't have to worry about stickiness. But if that doesn't work, on to the lemon. I think I'm gonna grab some of those baking powder boxes and leave them open too.

Thanks everyone. And don't worry - I was laughing and at the verge of tears the entire time we were cleaning it up. I cannot believe the scene. I didn't even take a picture.

Ps
The dogs went to town on it before I got in there to stop them. My little one was gagging and I opened his mouth to find a Wad Of it which I got to scrape out of his mouth. So the dogs also stink and need baths.

Amazing!

Thanks for your advice

Pour some white vinegar in a bowl and just leave it in the room for a few hours. Vinegar absorbs odors.

OMG!! This made me laugh because I did the same thing once and made the mistake, the HUGE mistake, of vacuuming up the cheese!!! Let's just say, I HAD to go buy a new vacuum after that. Chat Icon

Clean with lemons and even a vinegar/baking soda combo. They are both pretty good at neutralizing smells. Air out the house too, keep your windows open. It'll get better!! Chat Icon

I'd have to move. Chat Icon
Any of those cheeses make me want to vomit.
I can't even have it on the table when I'm eating. I start to lose my appetite and gag. That is how adverse I am to it and how sensitive to the smell. To me it's like eating something that has been left out to rot.

Open ALL your windows today and definitely try the vinegar and lemon juice.

Fresh coffee grinds. You pour it into a flat cake pan and leave it out. It masks and absorbs the smell.

Yes! I've also heard of boiling coffee grinds on the stove. My best friend's mom does this while cooking fish so that her whole house doesn't smell and it works!

Re: Locatelli Pecorino Romano kitchen disaster!

Vinegar seems to be helping. That and open sliding door and window

But now I'm sitting in it too long lol when I went out earlier and came it, it was definitely better.

Whewww. No more cheese for him

I'm laughing so hard! Is it bad that I feel just as bad about all of the wasted deliciousness of locatelli Romano as the smell you have to endure?! Somewhere 6 thousand miles away, a herd of mama sheep are baa-ing in sorrow...

I always shake the container too!

hahahaaha It's true It's such a waste! It's like gold lol

So far so good. I still get a hint of it by the stove area. Makes sense because that's where most of it went. And into tiny crevices. I'm just hoping it goes stale and loses it's scent sooner than later

DH says he smells nothing. Of course he doesn't. he did it! and honestly, I have the sniffer of a bloodhound. SO I'm probably gonna small it til we demo the kitchen next year hahaha
