What would you have done? UPDATE

Update:
Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure what happpened after that, but I think she called a friend after. I left a note in her mailbox asking if she was OK. I don't think she has checked her mailbox yet.

I have a text message ready to send to the landlord telling them what happened. I'm not sure if I should send it because I don't think it's really my business to tell someone about the mental state of someone else. It feels like I'm telling on her, and I don't want to cause any problems with the woman and her apartment, etc.

A few minutes ago someone (a friend or family member) came over to see her. They then walked out of the building and they got into her car (with the woman driving). The woman looked OK, and she was driving, so I guess she's better now?

Do I send the text to the landlord or mind my own business at this point?

_____________________________

OK, so in Germany people who live in apartments and houses do not really talk to their neighbors like in the US. I live in a three apartment house. The landlord is on the ground floor, I'm on the middle floor, and there is a woman in her late 20s-30s that lives on the top floor.

I say hi to everyone when I see them and talk a little about things to my landlord about if something is broken or something. I only have a hi and bye relationship with the woman above.

So someone rings my bell, and I see it's the woman above. She's frantic and speaking in German very quickly. The only thing I really got was Krankenhaus (hospital). I then told her my German is not so good, could you please speak in English. My German is OK, but I have enough on my plate and I just didn't want to deal with another thing.

She looks very disheveled and just got out of the shower with her hair wet and over her face. She then asks me to take her to the hospital. She says that there are little bugs and parasites all over her apartment. Now, we have a few little bugs in our apartment, so I thought that was what she was getting at. Then she starts saying they are all over her and me and pointing out chip on the door. I'm like, OK, that's not a bug, but whatever, let me get dressed and I'll take you to the hospital.

Generally in Germany, the crime rate is low and people trust each other. It isn't like NY, if that makes any sense. Doors are left open and security is low-- that sort of thing.
I felt as a good person I should take her to the hospital because what if something is seriously wrong.

My mom is currently here helping me out with a few things and supporting me. So I close the door and start brushing my teeth and getting ready. My mom asks if she should come. I say yes. DH is not here at the moment. My mom and I had a bit to drink last night and I felt I really shouldn't be driving. I also start thinking what if she starts seeing things on me and attacks me when I'm driving. My mom is worried that there will be bugs in the car, lol. I then explained to her there are no bugs.

So I tell the woman (I don't even know her name), I'm sorry I can't take you. I drank last night and I really shouldn't drive. I suggest she call a taxi to take her. Then she gets on the phone with the police or something and says the same thing. Then she runs across the street to a neighbour outside to take her to the hospital. I think she talked to my landlord, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

It's been pretty quiet since then, about 6 hours ago. But I can't help but worry, maybe she was asking for help. I'm pretty scared, too. Who knows what someone in that condition is capable of?

I also got reassurance from my mom that I didn't imagine that.

What would you have done? Should I send a message to the landlord? Call the police?

What would you have done?

I think you did the right thing. I would have called 911 or someone to come and get her bc she sounded like she was hallucinating or delusional or something. I would message the landlord and see if they know what is/was going on.

Re: What would you have done?

I would talk to the landlord. Could it be bed bugs? A couple of summers ago DH saw a next door neighbor being taken in an ambulance, so he was concerned about her - I was out of town. It happened that her apartment was inundated with bed bugs. They came to inspect our apartment, the one in the other side, and the apartments on top and below.

ETA: She was all bitten, so that's why they called an ambulance.

I thought bed bugs, too, but then she pointed to chips in the door frame and saying look, don't you see?? And then she's looking at my shirt and she was about to point out some "bugs." At that point I started thinking that it wasn't bed bugs.

If she was hallucinating I'd be afraid she'd set fire to the apartment to kill them or something insane like that.

Talk to the landlord and see if someone can check on her

OMG, I didn't even think of her starting a fire or something crazy like that. Ugh, I feel so awkward saying this to the landlord.

What would you have done?

I think you were right in not driving her because she seems like she was hallucinating but I would have called the police. She was reaching out for help and just sending her away to fend on her own in my opinion was really wrong.

Re: What would you have done?

I wouldn't have driven her because it sounds like she was hallucinating and I'd be afraid that she'd flip out in the car, causing an accident. But even with a lot on my plate - and I get that, I so completely get what it feels like to be overwhelmed with things - I would not have left her to deal with it alone. I would have called the police or the whatever the equivalent of 911 is and had the authorities take care of getting her the help she needed. I know you said she did so I'm assuming they showed up. Hope she's okay!

I would have called 911 and stayed in the hallway or right outside the building with her until they came. And I would have made my mom stay with me. I definitely don't think you should have driven her to the hospital.

I agree. I would not have driven her considering the circumstances but no way would I have left her by herself in that state. I think you should have at least called an ambulance and waited for them to show up. I hope she's OK.

That sounds scary. I really think you should have offered to call a friend or relative for her, and if not, called for an ambulance and stayed with her until she was taken to the hospital. She could have been struck by a car running across the street in that state. Plus I would have wanted to try to find out what exactly was going on. Is she on drugs, psychotic, had a medication reaction, it could have been a carbon monoxide leak, or maybe there really are bugs in her apartment and she was freaking out.

I would definitely talk to the landlord to find out if she's ok and what had happened! Update us if possible!

Definitely would have called an ambulance, she was having some kind of psychotic episode. I don't remember if the police come too.

If you want to get involved, ask the landlord if the upstairs neighbor has family you could contact because she was taken to the hospital.

I wouldn't speculate on what she could do in the future, you don't know yet why this happened, if it was the first time, or if she really is ill.

At this point I think I would mind my own business but if something else happens report it to the landlord.
