PLEASE, someone help me!

Between the Neocate and the cereal, my poor baby is SOOOOOOOO constipated. We've tried pear and prune juice and baby laxative and all have her doubled over in pain because they give her such bad gas. The doctor suggested giving her water, but she doesn't like it and won't drink itChat Icon I just don't know what to do. Anyone have any suggestions? Please?Chat Icon

Re: PLEASE, someone help me!

have you tried the q-tip trick? someone recently posted that this helped their dc go. you stick a qtip (well lubricated!) in and it will help stimulate them to go. maybe you should switch her to elecare, which is comparable to neocate, but less constipating.

Water really works. I've had to force it on Tori Chat Icon Even if you can get 1-2 oz down, it will help do the trick Chat Icon This and the thermometer in vaseline up the butt is what helped us......

a lot of websites suffest a teaspoon of dark, not light karo syrup.

• Get her some exercise. If your baby's a crawler, encourage her to do a few laps. If she's not crawling yet, try pumping her legs: While she's lying on her back, gently move her legs in a forward, circular motion as if she were pedaling a bicycle.

• Massage your baby's belly. Measure three finger-widths below her navel and apply gentle but firm pressure with your fingertips. Press until you feel a firmness or mass. Maintain gentle but constant pressure for about three minutes.

• If you feed your baby formula, ask her doctor about switching to a different brand. Some babies are less constipated on soy formula. And sometimes adding a teaspoon of Karo corn syrup to the formula also does the trick.

• Switch from rice cereal to barley or oat cereal, or add pureed fruits or vegetables to her regular cereal, once your baby is ready for them. Read about what foods to introduce when.

• Talk to your baby's doctor about treatment options. Ask about using an over-the-counter stool softener to make bowel movements more comfortable for your baby, but never give your baby a laxative without her doctor's approval. The doctor may also suggest you try a glycerin suppository if your baby is severely constipated. The suppository will stimulate the rectum and help her pass a stool. While using a suppository occasionally is fine, don't do it on a regular basis, since your baby could wind up relying on them to have a bowel movement.

Ok, the thermometer up the tookis works like a charm, but I'm afraid that too much of that will harm her.Chat Icon I have not tried suppositories, but maybe it's time for thatChat Icon

This is what we do too. Sorry for the TMI - but the thermometer helps to get the hard part of the poop out... I also use the tips of my finger's and push (from just below the belly button) - downward - It helps to get things moving...

Since we've started solids, Brendan's had a constipation problem too. I've been giving him a 4 oz bottle of water a day and it seems to help. He won't drink just plain water either so I mix in 1/2 oz to 1 oz of pear or prune juice with it and he drinks it all up.

In addition to the thermometer (I've only done this once - I'm afraid DS will get too used to it), we've given him prune juice, water and the glycerin suppositories (2x). DS wasn't constipated (not hard poo) but had really bad gas and a hard time going. As he's getting older, it doesn't bother him as much.

Another suggestion that our ped gave us to settle his stomach was chamomile tea. It seemed to work for us.

Also, the ped told us not to give him rice cereal at all, just stick to oatmeal. It is not as binding.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: PLEASE, someone help me!

When you give juice do you give it with water? You can let her get water in that way along with the juice.

What about holding the cup and letting her drink right out of it? It is messy but it might help.

What about laying her on her back and doing the bicycle with her legs?

And don't be nervous with the thermometer trick! DOn't stick it in far, that is all ---- but it does help.

My sister is battling this with her daughter and they are at the point where she has to do these like enema type things and she said it is HORRIBLE so if the thermometer works, then it is better then the alternatives!

I am sorry your little one is going through this Chat Icon

I give my DS 1oz of pear juice mixed with 3oz of water every day. This keeps him going daily. His doctor said that it was ok to give it to him daily.
You can also try giving him a warm bath, it also makes them go.

I'm not a big proponent of the thermometer trick being used often. I feel like eventually the baby starts to rely on it & not push on their own. It's fine for emergencies.

I would try a little watered down prune juice. I say A LITTLE because it works VERY well.

I would never use syrupChat Icon

I do mix the pear juice with water, but I have also mixed it into her cereal which seems to work really well. I just don't want her getting too used to the sweetness this early on. But I guess if it works, it works. The pear juice doesn't always give her gas, but often enough she gets it from the pear juice. I do not give her rice, just oatmeal. My mom swears that once her body gets used to the fiber in the pear juice that she will get less gas. I guess for now, the gas is better than the constipation. Thanks for all the adviceChat Icon

Re: PLEASE, someone help me!

When my babies had that problem i would
add water to the formula or
Take a little Vasaline on a q-tip and rub around the outside of the but (the ring) That usually stimulates them to go and it's not so abrasive as putting something in them.
Have you tried the baby laxative..is that what you said gave them bad gas and didn't work..because if that doesn't work you should talk to your Doc.

If you've been giving her rice cereal, stop. When my son is constipated I give him a Gerber container of prunes. I also give him barley cereal and skip the rice. Sometimes, I give him chamomile tea and that has helped too.

Re: PLEASE, someone help me!

My ped. recommened 1tsp of DARK corn sryup to 1oz of water. He didnt go for a week and I went out and bought all baby pooping stuff and called her to ask which one to use and she told me to do this. I tried it and let me tell you boy did he go. I try to give it to him every other day because it really helps him go and he loves it. It isnt sweet tasting and he also will not drink water. I gave him I think it was about 8oz the first time I gave it to him. The dr. told me I could give him as much as I wanted aslong as he is drinking all his formula which he is. I give him usually 4-5oz and that does the trick.
