Introducing solids

DD will be 4 months old next week. How did you know when to start introducing solids to your LO? She already gets rice cereal in her bottles to help her reflux, so I'm toying with the idea of skipping cereal with her and going straight to fruits and veggies. Thoughts?

Re: Introducing solids

DD really let us know when she was ready. She was VERY interested in whatever we were eating and would even mimic chewing motions while we ate. We started her just after 5 months with rice cereal and I wish we had just skipped it entirely. I tried to have her on that for a week or so before going to veggies and she just hated it, wasted my hard won breast milk, and did nothing for her. So around 5.5 months she started with pureed veggies then fruits and so on and so forth. Now she's 9 months and she eats literally everything.

Cereal made my 1st very constipated so I plan on skipping it with my 3rd just like I did with my 2nd. I'm hoping to introduce veggies after he turns 4 months.

Introducing solids

We skipped cereal and started baby led weaning at 6 months when she showed signs of readiness- being able to sit up, showed interest in food, losing the tongue thrust reflex.

Same. And I would do the same again, 100%. Baby-led weaning was great for us, and DD is now 11 months and basically eats what we eat. You don't have to make any purees and you all eat together, you don't have to spend time trying to spoon-feed. I would suggest looking into it!

DS started at 4 months. Got the green light from our ped. She suggested that we start with veggies in the orange family. A few weeks later we moved onto veggies in the green family. DD started at 5 months.

DS will be 5 months this week. At our 4 month well, I was given the green light to try any cereal, fruit or veggies in whichever order I wanted. With my other 2 DS, I did rice, oatmeal, then started green veggies, orange veggies and then did fruit. Both of my kids are awesome eaters so I did the same with DS3. He hates it! I'm questioning if he's ready. He gags and spits it out. I have done oatmeal, peas and sweet potatoes and he just isn't into it. I'm actually going to call the ped to see what they think.

My DS just turned 4 months and we got the go ahead from the GI to start solids. DS also already gets oatmeal in his bottles for reflux so it seems a waste to start there. Did your doc give you an idea of which foods are better for reflux babies?
How much rice do you put in your bottles? Just curious as im having issues putting the oatmeal in my bottles -- it causes the baby to be so full!

You just try it. You'll know when they're ready. DS used to chew when watching us eat, but when we tried solids, he would gag at the site of the spoon. He wasn't ready. Tried 2 weeks later and he did great.

DD didn't seem interested, but as soon as we tried, she took right to it. She hated her bottle, so I think she was just happy she was getting something new!

In a 5oz bottle I only add about 1 1/2 tsp of rice cereal. It's very little...just enough to slightly thicken it. She's on Elecare which is a very thin formula to begin with so she needs the rice to keep it down.

I remember from my son (he also had reflux) that I was told the veggies would be better for the reflux. Apples and peaches if I recall were the worst for him. They're very acidic. Peaches he threw up every single time so we eventually just stopped giving them to him.

She's been STTN since 6 weeks, but just in this past week or so she's started waking again every night around 3:45am. I dont know if it's the 4-month regression or if it's because we recently transitioned her from the Rock N Play to the crib. Was your LO a good sleeper prior to the 4 month regression?

Introducing solids

My DD has slight reflux. We tried oatmeal at 4 months and it was a disaster. Tried again at 5 months with a Happy Belly multi-grain and we had a winner. No tummy issues or reflux with that, so we stick to it. Peaches were terrible for her reflux and tummy, apples and bananas are our staples. I find that I can give her a mix of veggies and not a straight veggie in order for her to not have gas issues.
