Anyone work in development? Have a question
I have an opportunity for a development position. My background is not in development but I have a ton of not for profit experience and have worked closely with development over the years. This job could create a new career path for me but I couldn't stay in it too long as the pay is not comparable to what I am used to making. How long do you generally stay in one position? Is it common to move on and if so how soon? 1-2 years? Tx

Re: Anyone work in development? Have a question
Are you saying you want to move to NFP and then move back to profit in the future? It's possible, but makes it a bit harder to go back to profit. What new path would development help you create in the profit world?

Re: Anyone work in development? Have a question
No, the development position is also NFP, where I have an administrative background. I am looking at the development opportunity as a way to get my foot in the door, hone the skills I need and then look for more lucrative development opportunities in the future. I have never worked in the for profit world and really have no desire to.

I used to work in major donor giving and development. The pay is not good. I did better when I worked for private corporations in their planned giving departments. NFP's just don't have the budgets. It's a lot of door banging and calling and schmoozing. I loved it when I was younger and in lived in NYC but on LI it's a different animal. I worked with other NFP's and the development departments were a revolving door. If you don't bring in the funds, you're out the door. It's very salesy in a way.

Agree. I was in my position a little over a year and bailed for something completely different but a MUCH better fit for me.

Oh, ok. Then given that situation, I'd plan on staying 1.5-2 years in the job and then looking for another opportunity.
