Decreased fetal movement at the very end of pregnancy?

I'm 37.5 weeks pregnant and I was having on/off contractions for days and non-stop baby movement. Then suddenly contractions and baby movement halted. Got checked out and baby is fine.

Is this normal for the baby to move a lot less towards the end?

I don't remember with my two other kids.

I heard it is because they run out of room

Movement can change but you should still be doing kick counts and getting checked out of you have concerns. Lay down, drink some juice and see if movement increases. If not, always get checked out. I speak from experience as dd2 wouldn't be here if I didn't follow this advice.

Definitely! And it freaked me out every time. I would get increasingly worried and just when I was about to call my doctor, she'd go wild and start kicking my ribs again. Trust your gut, but I wouldn't worry too much. Chat Icon

ETA: My doctor was very anti kick counts. She said they freaked moms out unnecessarily. DD is 9 months and healthy as a horse.

I think I totally freaked my DH out yesterday. I called obgyn office and I was surprised they sent me to the hospital and not their normal office. Triage monitored me and ultrasound confirmed everything was fine.

I have regular scheduled ultrasound today and then norm weekly obgyn appointment tomorrow.

I do feel baby move a little now but nowhere near as much as she was moving a few days ago.

Curious if he gave any guidelines for monitoring movement? I do agree it's stressful and most often unnecessarily so, but decreased movement is the first sign of fetal distress in many serious cases and shouldn't be brushed off.

I was never told to do them but I couldn't have anyway- because I never felt kicks.
I had one heck of an anterior placenta and I rarely EVER felt her move.
Ever.

So anything like that was out of the question for me.

I had elevated BP my whole pregnancy and she was always measuring small so I had to go for weekly NST's at the end. I would lay there with that buzzer in my hand and wait to feel her move so I could hit it. Well I'd lay there for almost and hour every time and nothing.
Meanwhile on the sono she was moving around like crazy. Finally the doctor gave up and was like- forget it.... this isn't working, you don't feel anything!

I see my high risk doctor today so I am going to mention it for sure. I was told to keep track of kick counts by her at my last appointment.

This is how I was at triage yesterday. The monitor said baby was moving but I couldn't feel anything. We could see baby moving on the ultrasound.

Before yesterday, I felt the baby moving non-stop.

She told me to trust my instincts most of all and the tricks to try and get baby to move- drinking juice, laying on my left side. But she always said if I ever was worried to call her or go to the hospital, but just that the kick counts weren't necessary and often caused more alarm than necessary.

Around 28 weeks I had a similar experience. Suddenly wasn't feeling her, they put me on the monitor and she was moving like crazy but I couldn't feel a thing. Doctor was surprised but said it was most likely bc of her position. The next day or so I was feeling her again. Fast forward to 35 weeks it happened again and thankfully I got checked out bc she was in distress and needed to be delivered asap. I don't mean to be an alarmist or anything but obviously it's very personal for me.

Gotcha. I guess that's just not any different than I consider them anyway. I wasn't doing it at a scheduled time or doing anything formal. Just paying attention and doing what you described if movement seemed decreased.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the person. Some people are like "OMG baby only kicked 9 times in an hour instead of 10, I need to call a doctor." I think that may be what she meant. Not saying that this is you OP, just that it happens! Glad you got checked and everything was alright! Chat Icon

It's def common towards the end
But the one time I felt decreased movement they also sent me to labor and delivery. I was 38 weeks. Turned out my amniotic fluid was low so i was induced and had my baby.

They checked my fluid yesterday also and said it was fine. I was hoping I could deliver yesterday but I just got sent home.

I am glad I have regular scheduled appointments today and tomorrow or I would probably be stressing. I do feel baby move now though, just not as often. Yesterday I wasn't feeling anything.

It is nornal but trust your gut. I had it in both pregnancies. First time I was sent to l and d for monitoring.

Second time I was just about 39 weeks and my ob sent me straight to the hospital. I ended up staying for an induction. She said she could safely get her out now. Turns out when I delivered the cord was around her neck.
