resigning from teaching job mid-year

I have been offered a job back in NYC in a good school, as i have been very unhappy in my current position on LI. One big reason behind me leaving is that I am math/spec ed certified, with all of my previous experience in that field. My current position has me teaching in all 4 subject areas. So my question is:

How would you go about telling your current boss you are leaving, and does anyone know how it works mid-year?

Check your districts policy about leaving. I left a position in the fall and gave 2 weeks, but I know some schools require 30 days notice. Sure you wouldn't want to wait it until the end of the year?

resigning from teaching job mid-year

My friend just left her position and gave 30 days notice as noted in the contract. I know admin was not pleased, but oh well! They're the reason she left.

I was told that they make decisions in the next two weeks about the following year and that they don't see me as a good fit for their district. There is a potential that they can change their minds, but alot has happened that gave me the indication that they are not keeping me, doubled with the fact that there are not nearly as many special ed students coming into the building next year and they won't need as many teachers. I personally do not feel comfortable having to enter into a building between now and June, knowing I am not returning. I am a firm believer in that you don't always have to LOVE your job, but you certainly should not feel uncomfortable in your workplace. I would much rather go back to NYC now, and transition to a new building knowing I have more job security.

Neither - we live in a different region of the state. If I am being honest, I would be hesitant to leave a LI job midyear since I always hear how they might blackball you from every applying to LI again. I'm not sure if that is how it still is, but that is the impression I got when I worked on LI 10 years ago. If you never plan on working on Li again, they go for it!

I feel much more secure in nyc and plan to stay there. LI is very unstable for new teachers and I dont want to risk staying out here

You must give 30 days notice. If not you can literally lose your license if you have a vindictive principal. Apparently they are the ones who would initiate that action. I got this straight from the state. Call your local BOCES and ask for the certification department. They'll confirm

Give whatever notice is required (looks like it is 30 days) but maybe they will find a replacement sooner and let you go earlier esp if things are not working out.

I highly doubt they'll let you go early. My friend gave her 30+ day notice in November and they just found her replacement this week and he has to wait 30 days at his current school. So the district will have a sub in the position from Jan 3 - end of February!!!

It's 30 calendar days everywhere because that's based on state law.
