UPDATE 1/20 ....Has anyone see the story/video about A Dog's Purpose
Warning...it's disturbing.
People are calling for a boycott of the movie because of it. And I think its justified. I was so upset watching it.
One of the dogs desperately resisted shooting a risky scene, but chilling footage shows filmmakers apparently forcing the animal into rushing water.
Among those who spoke out about the video was actor Josh Gad, who voices the dogs in the film. In a post on Facebook, Gad said he was “shaken” after watching the video.
“As the proud owner of a rescue dog and a fervent supporter of organizations like PETA, I have reached out to the production team and studio to ask for an explanation for these disturbing images,” he wrote.

Update:
Universal Cancels Premiere of A Dog’s Purpose After Outcry Amid the controversy surrounding a troubling video revealed a stressed German Shepherd was forced to perform in artificial rapids on the set of the upcoming A Dog’s Purpose, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertianment have cancelled the movie’s premiere, which was to have taken place in Los Angeles this weekend.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has called for a boycott of the film and is pushing for further action, calling on the director of the Amblin production, Lasse Hallstrom, and producer Gavin Polone to pledge never to use animals in films again and to rescue the dogs from Birds & Animals Unlimited, the training and handling facility said to be the provider of the canines. (The Hollywood Reporter wrote about alleged federal Animal Welfare Act violations at the company’s Acton, Calif., headquarters on July 11.) In cancelling the premiere, Universal and Amblin issued a statement saying, “Because Amblin’s review into the edited video released yesterday is still ongoing, distributor Universal Pictures has decided it is in the best interest of A Dog’s Purpose to cancel this weekend’s premiere and press junket. Amblin and Universal do not want anything to overshadow this film that celebrates the relationship between humans and animals.
The Hollywood Reporter: PETA Calls for Boycott of ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ After On-Set Video Surfaces
“Since the emergence of the footage, Amblin has engaged with many associated with the production of the film, including safety personnel, trainers and stunt coordinators as part of their in-depth review. While we are all disheartened by the appearance of an animal in distress, everyone has assured us that Hercules the German Shepherd was not harmed throughout the filmmaking.”
The film is scheduled for wide release on Jan. 27.
Hallstrom did not return a request for comment about PETA’s most recent demand. Polone, however, was forceful in a conversation with THR (for which he regularly writes opinion columns about industry issues). A prominent Hollywood vegan and animal rights activist, he contends “PETA wants to fire up its base and it’s not productive. It’s also kind of crazy — I’m the person they should be strong-arming? This is a movie about promoting the idea of animals as sentient and deserving of empathy and rights.”
Polone went on to note that he’d worked with PETA in the past, but disagreed with its contention that no animals should be used in production. The organization has argued that CGI should solely be employed, but others in the industry insist that such technology would be cost-prohibitive. “It’s naïve and untenable and will never happen — we all know that,” the producer says. “What’s needed is a replacement for the [American Humane Association],” the non-profit monitoring group financed by producers that’s tasked with on-set animal oversight. (It’s known for its “No Animals Were Harmed” accreditation.) He continued, “There’s a person there all the time and clearly they are ineffective. That’s the issue and that’s what needs to be corrected.”
For its part, PETA has written to the AHA to ask for a complete copy of a report that the monitoring group claimed on Wednesday it had initiated as soon as it saw the footage, bringing in an independent investigator to spearhead. (It also placed the on-set AHA safety representative on administrative leave.) “We’re hearing that the monitor did not report [the incident] to her supervisors but the AHA gave the movie an acceptable rating anyway,” says Lange. “We don’t know if that is true, but we’re asking.”
When contacted by THR, the AHA declined to address PETA’s request. In 2013, THR exposed a history of complicity, internal cover-ups and failed investigative work at the monitoring group.

Re: Has anyone see the story/video about A Dog's Purpose
I was so upset to see this! You would think a movie about the love of dogs would treat them better! I don't think I'll be seeing it which is disappointing since I loved the book!

I didn't watch the video but I saw what it is about and no thank you - I don't generally like movies where animals are used as props and characters because you never know how they are treated

I saw the story and a short clip - I couldn't watch. It broke my heart. Even watching the commercial for the movie before all this came out, I told DH I could never go see it, I would be crying the whole movie!

Re: UPDATE 1/20 ....Has anyone see the story/video about A Dog's Purpose
I watched it. The dog almost drowned at the end of the video clip. The poor dog was so scared, when he was being thrown in, pushed in, repeatedly. It broke my heart. It was really terrible and they cannot say no animals were harmed in the making. Bc this dog was mentally and even probably physically harmed in this scene.

UPDATE 1/20 ....Has anyone see the story/video about A Dog's Purpose
I'm glad the premiere is canceled. I wouldn't have gone to see it anyway after reading about this. It's so sad how the dog was treated and who knows what else happened during filming!

Re: UPDATE 1/20 ....Has anyone see the story/video about A Dog's Purpose
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-dogs-purpose-trainers-release-statement-on-controversial-leaked-video_us_58865ed0e4b0e3a7356b0282
Now, the company that provided the trainers for the movie, Birds and Animals Unlimited, have released a lengthy statement to The Huffington Post, detailing what really went down in the leaked video. The trainers claim that TMZ “falsely edited” the video and that the dog was not harmed in any way. “Hercules, a two-year-old German Shepherd, had been in training for months to perform the swimming scenes for this film,” the statement reads. “He was chosen for the film based on his love of the water.”
Read the full statement below:
Last week a falsely edited video was released to the media. It portrayed a dog being forced to enter a pool against its will and suggested that the dog was traumatized as a result. No such thing occurred, nor would it ever occur under the supervision of our animal trainers.
Hercules, a two-year old German Shepherd, had been in training for months to perform the swimming scenes for this film. He was chosen for the film based on his love of the water.
The shot that Hercules performed began with his jumping from the end of the pool into the water as he’d been conditioned to do, then swimming out to a stunt actor and pulling her to safety.
After many successful takes throughout the day, a request was made to have Hercules perform the same behavior, but changing the point from which he was to enter the pool. As the camera started rolling, the trainer in the water began to call the dog. It quickly became apparent that Hercules did not want to enter the pool from this location.
After less that one minute of Hercules insisting on getting back to his original starting point, this plan was abandoned and he was brought to the end of the pool from which he’d been conditioned to enter, and he did so happily.
We cannot identify the voice that appears on the videotape saying “Just gotta throw him in,” but there were many people on the film set and it was not anyone with any authority over Hercules’ welfare as some of the news coverage implied.
In the next shot, Hercules entered the pool from his rehearsed location.
While swimming across the pool, the current carried him closer to the wall at end of the pool than it had in previous takes. When the dog reached the wall, he was briefly submerged at which point the diver and trainer immediately pushed him to the surface. Trainers poolside then pulled him out of the water. Hercules shook the water off and wagged his tail.
During the filming, an American Humane Representative was present at all times, approving and documenting every shot. Whenever Hercules was in the water there were two trainers poolside, one trainer in the water, a safety diver, as well as stunt personnel.
The day before the scene was filmed, Hercules and his trainers did a comprehensive rehearsal at the pool location with safety and stunt teams to make certain that safety measures were in place to insure that the dog was not put in any danger.
These safety measures that were put in place worked flawlessly to ensure that no harm came to the dog (or the people) who were in the water during filming that day.
Birds and Animals Unlimited is currently reviewing available footage of these scenes and is evaluating its legal options. In the meantime, we strongly encourage the news media that receive such disturbing, defamatory and maliciously edited videotapes to exercise caution in their broadcast and characterization.
Not making a judgement at this point, based on this new info, just posting the other side of the story.

Re: UPDATE 1/20 ....Has anyone see the story/video about A Dog's Purpose
I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the video. I don't like to make judgments off of hearsay, but from the still images I saw of the video, it doesn't look good.
I was probably not going to see the movie anyway because I don't know if I could emotionally handle it.

If the video has been edited, why not just release the unedited version and set the record straight?
