Got a notice today. Queens court. Minimum 20 days. I do not want to postpone but serving isn't a definite, right? Do You i have to go through the selection process?

Re: Grand jury

I was picked the first time and served for 4 months- 2 days a week.

It was an amazing experience. It's a great look into what grand jury's actually do and what evidence they see or don't see when making their decisions.

The best part is my company paid me my full salary when I was serving.

Ugh, Grand jury is the worst! They do not care if you are 100 and can't walk or even if you can speak English!!! I got called for it once at it was going to be 1x a week for 11 months. They will be calling 100's of people in, so you most likely won't be picked, but showing up doesn't count like in regular jury duty. If you don't get picked your name goes back into the "drum" as they called it to be called again. Good Luck!

I served grand jury in queens probably about 10 years ago. It was a month and basically there was no selection process. Whoever got the summons for grand jury served. They did let people state their cases but hardly anyone got out of it- very different from regular jury duty. I really enjoyed it- but I also got paid by my job for the whole time too so it wasn't a hardship.

I served Grand Jury in Riverhead a few years back. Every day for a month. Once I was inside, they did do a lottery (like actual balls with numbers) because they were selecting for multiple grand jurys. If your number was called, they did not want to anything about anything. No excuses, no hardships. They didn't care.

I got paid for the time (the whole month), and I rather enjoyed it. So for me wasn't a big deal. Right after I was done, my employer changed their policy and only pays 5 days now.

I actually went for Grand Jury in Queens years ago and explained to them that losing my paycheck would be a hardship and they let me go.

Nope - no questions. And they totally dismissed me. I was in and out in 1/2 hr.

I think serving is almost guaranteed. I served 1 day a week for months! I actually enjoyed it though.

ETA: When I went in for grand jury, a lot of people complained of hardships and they said they'd work around their schedule. Plus you get paid for the day (though it's very little and since I got paid through my job, I didn't get it) and travel expenses so there's really not much room for a plea of hardship.

Grand jury

They will let you postpone. I got called in Suffolk years ago and they let you postpone for 6 months. 6 months came and I still wasn't able to serve, so I ended up sending a letter to the Commissioner of Jurors and said that serving grand jury for a month would be a hardship for me, but that I would be happy to serve in a trial jury pool and asked to be transferred there instead. They transferred me and I was dismissed my first day.
