Getting a gift you already have?
I prepped my 4yo on what to say when she doesn't particularly care for a gift (like clothes which she doesn't usually care about). What do you tell them to say if they already have something? Just thank you and keep the rest to yourself? Especially if someone asks, I'm not good at handling that myself bc I'm a terrible liar and I don't usually encourage my 4yo to lie

Re: Getting a gift you already have?
My speech to my kids is say thank you no matter what-they have it already, they don't like it, it's not a toy etc..

Re: Getting a gift you already have?
We have encountered this. Once my Dd received eight of the same toy for her birthday. Since we had friends over everyone was laughing and I thankfully got gift receipts for most. I told Dd to say thank you. We returned most, donated, and regifted outside of that friend group. I got Dd a gift that was larger than normal to replace the duplicated with all the returns made.

Thanks. It was just awkward bc it was just us and another family exchanging. Before my 4yo could even finish unwrapping her friend blurted out what it was and dd said "I already have that". So my friend asked if we have it and I said yes but hers is missing pieces and not really usable anymore so it's fine but of course it's just awkward.
I can tell her to just day thanks ands nothing else but when you're specifically asked that's a little harder.

I remind my kids to just say thank you no matter if we already have the toy, don't like the toy, etc. Then I either try to return, donate or regift.

Re: Getting a gift you already have?
i've been working with my daughter to just say thank you and i've reminded her that i usually can "fix" things after the fact and not to worry about it. And by fix i mean return, exchange or regift. Sometimes we even practice getting gifts we dont like so that she'll be better at it.
