Lego Storage
With Christmas coming and my son being obsessed with Legos, I am trying to find a good way to store them. He has some sets that are still put together that he likes to play with, some he has rebuilt into new things and then tons of these little tiny pieces that I find everywhere. Any suggestions?

Re: Lego Storage
DS has a ton of Legos and they were starting to take over every room. Plus, I found it difficult to keep the sets together b/c they were everywhere and pieces would scatter. At first, I would have each color in a separate bin when the kits were broken down, but it became difficult to find all the pieces if he wanted to build a kit again.
So.... this was my project all last winter. Each kit is in it's own ziplock bag with the instructions, and all the left over pieces are in bins separated by color.

Lego Storage
We use Rubbermaid like poster above but our kits are all scattered. Drives me crazy but DH is the one to sit and build legos with DS so I gave up caring!

Re: Lego Storage
We use a storage tower that my mom got us from Toys r Us. There's four bins that are just open bins and 2 more that have little dividers in them for special small pieces. DS likes to put the sets together once and then doesn't care after that so we don't worry about keeping the kits together.

Amazing.
My DS has like a dozen kits which were put together but since taken apart, and there's no way I'd be able to consolidate them kit by kit... and instructions?? Ha. You're my hero.

Re: Lego Storage
I have a 3 drawered storage unit - each lego kit gets its own ziploc bag and all pieces and booklet are kept in the bag. He's only allowed to have a few sets out at any one time and if he mixes them up to make something new - eventually he has to take it apart and separate back into the bag with the set.
He's got one yellow box of the classic set with general pieces in it, and a few other plastic bins with random pieces in it, but for the most part every piece belongs to a set and he keeps it that way
without those ziploc bags i'd go nuts

This is amazing!! I think I will try going the bin route with the ziploc bags. I never thought of that and keeping it with the instructions is a great idea.

Re: Lego Storage
They're dumped in one Rubbermaid - it's Lego. You're supposed to use your imagination to build whatever .......
Go be creative. I don't have the time or energy to worry about what does with what ......I keep the instruction booklets in a Ziploc ........but you're on your own to find the pieces once you break it apart ....
And I if STEP on it ........it goes in the garbage !!
yes, - I am a Lego Nazi

Re: Lego Storage
We recently started keeping the original box and put the pieces in ziploc bags and put them back in the original box. 7yo DS's closet is mostly all lego boxes. He does not keep any clothes in his closet.
He then has plastic bins full of loose legos that he can build with his imagination.
Both boys have bookshelves full of legos that have already been built.

Re: Lego Storage
We do the ziplock bag thing too! Takes up less space and DS rebuilds it every so often. I just need a container for the bags because now we have them on a bookshelf.
