Turning in leased car - questions
Hi everyone. I leased a car a couple years ago and the lease is ending in a few months. This is my first (and last) lease and I do not know what the procedure is when turning it in.
Can someone humor me and give me an idea of what to expect. Are there fees? Things to be careful of?
I am planning on buying my next one, lease was not for us.

Turning in leaseed car - questions
with Honda and Nissian we got a letter int he mail a few months before to set up an appt for them to come look at the car and send a report. After that I made an appt and brought the car in and turned in keys and got the license plates (we are in CT so not sure about NY license plate) but then I had to go online and cancel the plates with the DMV and that was it. Never heard from anyone for money or anything. It was really easy

Turning in leaseed car - questions
we've turned in 2 leases and the procedure is pretty easy. you will need to go back to your lease contract to see if you will incur a set lease return fee (some companies do, some don't). other fees you COULD incur include charges related to damage (they usually forgive small dings), excessive wear on your tires, replacement key fee (my husband lost one of his key fobs), mileage overage, to name a few.
when we returned to Nissan, we had to pay a few small fees because my husband had excessive wear on his tires. for Jeep, we had mileage overage fees.

Really? That's nuts! That didn't happen when I turn in my Ford a few yrs ago.
When I turned in my Taurus they came to me and did an inspection. The guy actually told me this was the cleanest, easiest car he ever inspected. I received a report from him within minutes after he was done.
Went to the dealer a few days later and turned it in. No issues at all.

I was under about 10,000 with my Honda. They charged us for every single thing. Most of which was wear and tear. I had the worst experience with them. We waited almost three hours for them to do the return. Never again.

Really? That's nuts! That didn't happen when I turn in my Ford a few yrs ago.

Went to the dealer a few days later and turned it in. No issues at all.
Same here. I turned in my explorer at Sayville Ford when the lease was up (way under the miles, I totally overpaid for too many miles). I actually didn't even do the inspection. They kept sending the letters to my old address. So by the time I made the appointment to turn it in, there was no time for an inspection. I expected to get charged for every little thing but I got a letter a few weeks later saying I didn't owe anything.

i had to buy out my toyota bc i was so far over miles.
i tried to get out of it early but they wouldn't let me without a buyout.... so i ended up buying then keeping a couple more years.
it was the fj cruiser in the early years so it held value pretty well.
buying or leasing either way is a hassle when you turn or trade in. I dont see being happy ever.

We were told there would be a "disposition" fee of like $400 or some ridiculous amount for them to clean the car and haul it off to auction.
Insane.
However if we were to lease another Infiniti they would waive that fee, look the other way on like 1000 miles over the limit, and also look the other way on $500 worth of damage.
We were told regular "wear and tear" was not considered damage.
You really have to look at your lease agreement because they are all different

I am on my second leased Mercedes. We turned in my last car 3 months early and was over about 5k in miles and had a big dent. All was forgiven and I was able to get my new car with no issues.
If I had not gotten another car, I am sure I would have been charged thousands for the big dent and small little scrapes here and there.
DH likes to buy cars but I like leasing. I think I will continue leasing and get a new car every 2-3 yrs.

Not necessarily true. I have leased 7 cars. Only one was I over miles and the others I was under by a lot. I never had any issues or hidden fees or supposed damage.

Why would they charge you more if you are under? Isn't that better for them because they can resell the car for a higher price?

call to have your car inspected a few weeks before you plan to turn it in. this way you know ahead of time what the damage will be.
last car i was under mileage and had all things that fell under normal wear and tear. nothing else. i turned in my lease and got a bill for the end of lease fee. that fee is waved when you re lease.
check your original paperwork.
when you want to return the car make an appointment and take a picture of your mileage. (they put in a wrong amount one time) they will make you sign something that you are turning it in -make sure your mileage numbers match. the inspection paperwork stays with the car (make copy for yourself)

This, and both were Chevrolet. It couldn't have been any easier. We just made sure to clean the cars, take some pictures, and returned it to the dealership with little to no work.

Yeah, Never heard of this in 20 years of leasing cars. It doesn't make sense, they want their cars back with least amount of miles and wear and tear, it only helps them in the resale. I've always been under mileage. My mom in fact is usually turns in her car after 3 years with 10K TOTAL on it! The dealers love her! They always joke does she even drive the car, because besides the low mileage, she keeps them pristine.

I've returned two leased Hondas I just go to the dealership and give them the car granted I've gotten another Honda they have someone come inspect it and I get a letter saying what they found. Both times I was under mileage and they found small things they wanted to charge me for but they forgive them since I got another Honda. I've never paid anything.

I was a few thousand under with my Honda. We went to Toyota next so we didn't get another Honda and we had nothing. My guess is it depends on the actual dealership. Not the make of the car. Mission we were over oil change due, under mileage by a lot, the inspector said the tires were shot but didn't put it in the report but told us they may charge us and they didn't. No issues with leasing

I've never had an issue turning in a lease. Last two cars were returned under mileage. Both had some scratches but estimated damage was within our damage waiver. Honda sent us something in the mail about 2 months before lease was due to end. We arranged an inspection to assess any damage and submitted that letter when we gave the car back. No problems.
