I have a question that I am dying to have answered...
Why is it considered so bad and racist to want people to come to this country legally? I am not being snarky, I am genuinely curious. I am 100% against mass deportation of all of the illegals that are already here. That's just mean. But, going forward, why is it wrong to want people vetted properly? Why is that racist? For me, I don't care if you are Mexican, from the Middle East, or from lily white Ireland- come one, come all, come by the millions. I don't care. Just, please, do it legally. Why is that wrong?!? Please, don't tell me it's because I have white privilege. I would want any white person who came here from Europe to come here legally too.

That's not what's racist. What's racist is referring to Mexicans as rapists and drug dealers and wanting muslims to register like Jewish people had to during the holocaust.
Also assuming a person of color was at his rally to protest instead of being a supporter.

You're not wrong, racist, or privileged by asking that question. I disagree with President-elect Trump on a lot of issues but agree our immigration system needs an overhaul. But referring to an entire nationality as rapists and murderers is not ok. Asking an entire religious group to "register" sounds a little unconstitutional.
Interesting fact: most people that are undocumented in this country actually come in through legal channels: tourist visas, student visas, etc. But they stay longer than their visa allows and now they're illegal.

I don't think it is racist at all to request individuals come to the US legally and require them to be vetted, and to take an oath supporting the US. I personally am in favor of requiring people to come here legally. For those that are here already, I personally feel that if they are willing to pay taxes (no refunds), are law abiding, and have no criminal history, then after 10 years, apply for expedited citizenship. I would also be fine if they served in the US military and became citizens much faster.
Where the racism comes in to play is when you assume that the people who are here are rapists, murderers, and criminals. It is painting people with a wide brush.

Not racist but the fact that Mike Pence signed a bill allowing businesses in his state to refuse service to gays ands lesbians is a huge issue for me.

I agree, that is disgusting. I didn't support, nor did I vote, for Trump. I was just genuinely curious why wanting people coming to this country legally= racist. I understand what people are talking about now.

I hate when people say well Pence will really being running the country. Pence is a scary conservative and its views and laws like that make accepting him as our VP very difficult for me.

I think it's possible to express concern about illegal immigration, and the challenges it causes, without being an inhumane asshole. That in itself is not racist. But I seldom hear anyone talk about it (or complain, usually) without resorting to derogatory and often racist comments.
It is a hot button issue in my town as we have a big population of immigrants, mainly from Guatemala. I don't know the status of each and every one but it's frequently a topic of conversation (a favorite for one of my neighbors who loves to rant but has no problem running into town to pick up guys to work in his house   ) and the amount of hatred is pretty depressing.

I have a question that I am dying to have answered...
I think some people find it hypocritical given the fact that every single one of us is technically the descendent of an illegal immigrant except for those who were indigenous to this land that was stolen from them. At least that's one way of looking at it.
We have also sold this "American dream" to the world and people have been very desperate to achieve that by any means necessary. Some are able to complete the immigration process, others have just gotten lost or skirted the system.
Part of it may be that we've positioned ourselves as a very welcoming place when we're actually kinda far from it. Perhaps some people come here with the best intentions and are beleaguered or intimidated by the naturalization process.
And then definitely it's like PP said - blanket generalizations of immigrants as negative stereotypes is what makes itbogoted and often racist. You can say you want stricter border controls and immigration policies because we need tighter security but it shouldn't hinge on painting immigrants as terrible people to be scared of.

Could the reason be that more illegal immigrants also came in during his presidency? I just heard a quote about how many million immigrants came in under Obama (with no reference to how many he sent out).
Do you think it was kept Hush Hush because he did not want to publicize that for fear of backlash?

He never referred to an entire nationality as rapist and murderers. Does anyone on here even know exactly what he said? It was this:

He is referring to the illegal immigrants coming in from Mexico. He is basically saying that Mexico is forcing out their criminals, drug addicts and murderers and shipping them to the US, so it becomes OUR problem. Whether or not you agree with that, he never said ALL Mexicans are bad or rapists.
